Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hello,

I have recently acquired a lovely jet lamp - however it has an old T-cap.

I want to use the bottle in one of my white jet base and lids, but the T-cap is too large for the white lid.

The only solution i can see is to trim the plastic T-cap, perhaps only by 3mm so that it fits the conventional Jet lid.  Obviously i would prefer to remove the lid first, trim then replace.

Q Has anyone removed the T-cap lid without damaging the bottle? It seems to be glued in place.  The glue looks pretty old.  If so, how?

Q Will removing the lid temporarily damage the chemical balance of the bottle contents?

Thanks, Simon

Hi Simon

I've had the same problem with wanting to use a T-Cap bottle in a plastic jet.......my solution was to use medium grade sandpaper wrapped around a small wooden block.......I carefully sanded, working my way around the edge of the T-Cap until i'd removed enough, (approx 2mm in diameter) so the cap would slide right on.  A plastic lid will sit approx 5mm higher than usual on T-Cap bottles due to the inner plastic moulding which is there to locate around metal screw caps.

Thanks Pete,

Great suggestion - i really hadn't thought of that one!!!

Loving these suggestions - my aren't you inventive! ;o)

Great suggestion by Richard too.

I'd only pursue this method if you wanted to retain the bottle & T-cap to go back in its original base, or if the bottle contents need replacing.

.....it's best to try & remove the cap by gripping the bit screwed on the bottle otherwise you might crack the disk section off the top.  I wrap several layers of insulation tape around the cap to help get a good grip.

Watch the glue aswell as bits can flake off and drop in the bottle :)
