Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Few questions for my Grande - Sticking wax and wax at top

Hey people..

So after i filtered my Grande with great success i have begun experiencing other problems.

First of all.. The wax tends to stick to the side of the globe.. Autumn told me to add Glycerin to the liquid, which i did but the wax still sticks, however not much but still enough to irritate me. I've the decided to try the method described in the Lava Library, but i have a few questions:

1. The guide tells me to use Dawn dish soap. However here in DK i cant get such. Will normal Dish soap do ?

2. Iam told to empty the bottle. This includes the wax i presume ? Whats the easiest way to get the wax out?

3. Should i only use Dish soap or should i mix it with tap water ? In other words.. Am i just suppposed to clean the inside of the lamp or is it because the soap should be lubricated on the inside of the lamp

When the wax sticks its easy enough to get off, i just have to twist the lamp a few times.. But i would prefer not to have to do this :)

Then  i have another problem.. After adding glycerin to the mix its like the wax likes to stay at top. At first i thought it was because i needed a dimmer, as many has talked about but that doesnt help .. If i dim it down it still stays at top and flow just gets 'badder' and if dimmed enough down, all wax falls to the bottom.. Any ideas ?

I've added two pictures for you to see what i mean

About the wax at the top but it seams as though you have added too much glycol - i would take some water out of the lamp and replace it with distilled water - that should help.

With the sticky wax the best option would be to completely empty the globe and clean it out with hot water and a bit of soap then rinse it out and put the contense back in - the remaining soap residue should prevent the wax from sticking.
Thanks Tim.. So i should wash the lamp with hot water and soap.. How much shall i rinse out afterwards? Because if i rinse too much out the soap will be rinsed out too right ?
yea just hot water and soap (hot water from the kettel) to melt the wax and soap to clean it. use a regular amount of soap and genrious rinsing but ovesley if you rinse too much then all the soap will go.
Okay! But should the wax be in the globe when doing this ?
maybe after cleaning it out   take some distilled water (maybe like around 1/4 cup or little less with a few drops of soap. pour into bottle give it a swirl so it completely coats inside of bottle but gently so you dont make soap bubbles then make sure you use a long funnel and also pour a little of the soap water thru funnel to and return contents.. after the lava put in the water which you might want to have a little soap in.. and i really doubt you should use tap water.. distilled would be best.

Okay thanks..

How do you get the wax out?

pop the top..   get a pot of water and put on stove  put a plate in pot  that will withstand the hot water  then put your bottle on top the plate      no need to boil it .. i personally have a gas stove and put my stove at a setting of 3 1/2 and let it slowly melt the wax..    as far as amount of water in pot.. no need to fill pot... i guess enough to the water line is a bit above lava line..   when wax is soft enough where it all is soft.. very gently pour into a clean sterile jar or glass container..  as this jar can be put in pot to re heat for returning contents..  just dont dump the bottle though.. really do it as gently the lava and water will of course mix within its self.. cant be helped that i know of.. so you dont want to emulsify *make it look like a shake.

hope this helps

To avoid the liquid and wax mixing shouldn't i just pour as much liquid out as i can before i put the globe on the stove ? And just let a very very small amount of liquid stay in the globe, just so it tops the wax?
i thought about that.. but i came to this conclusion.. if you already have wax sticking to inside bottle then perhaps more would stick on way out.. so maybe empty like half the water but leave other half so wax flow straight out bottle.. with little or hopefully no more sticking.. just pour with caution..   it will be i am sure impossible to stop wax from mixing up in water some what.. dont stress that..it will settle itself as a laba chunk again
If you're going to empty the wax you should leave about half an inch of water. Any more than that may cause problems.

Okay i will try that ..

Here in Denmark its not possible to get a long funnel so i will have to attach some sort of tube to the end of my current funnel.. I could use a piece of paper and just wrap it around but im thinking if the paper would do something to the contents ?

And when i put the globe in the pot on the stove and melt the wax.. Should the wax just be as melted as when the lamp is flowing or should it be more like liquid ?

The way i melt and sort out wax is to take the water out of the globe first, then put the globe with the wax on the base and use the base to melt the wax insted of puting it in a pot.

To get the wax back in I use a plastic tube which comes with the gookit and a funnel but if you havent got this then try using the tube which often comes with a petrol can and a funnel to get the wax back in with - that might work.
