Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I have searched high and low all over Oozing Goo, I can't find a supplier who has coils for our lamps. Does anyone know where I can find the coils? We have the Goo, dimmers, globes and everything else but coils. If anyone knows please help. I would be glad to share many of my "Secrets" if someone can direct me to a pile of coils ( Actually a dozen will hold me for a bit) I am finding so called Stainless coils at Home Depot and Lowes, but they rust in a few weeks and cause all kinds of unwanted debris floating in my clear lamps....not good.

I decided to test and see if a new coil in my China clear/white 52oz would fix it's issues. What do you know, it does! I thought I would share the spring type I used and some photos in case anyone out there wants to give it a go. Well worth it. My lamp actually flows now. Before, it would not attach to the spring and it would just blob up at the bottom and stay there. Even after cleaning the cheap coil inside.
Now, it's what a should be! :D Thanks to all here for the wealth of information and knowledge. Without it, this would not have happened.
Package Info - Springs purchased at Lowe's

Old coil on the left, new coil on the right. Penny is to show size.

Great new flow!

This is from KRI5's discussion. Thanks for info, KRI5 (Johnny Chimpo LOL).  Hope this helps, CRASHGUY.

Mathmos,

Thanks for the info. I purchased 4 packages and have them in two of my new projects. If this works then I am a happy guy !

Thanks again !

Is this for real? I've looked at all the springs at my local Lowes and it's a joke. All of the springs are "Spring Steel" which ruin the goo as they rust into nothing. Is this a genuine Stainless Steel spring?

I've read the package and I don't see "Stainless Steel" on it. I just put 2 springs into a couple big customs I am doing. I am watching them to see if I see any rust. I will be sure to update.

I've mentioned this to Crash briefly but I wonder if it would be easier if someone just bought a spool of stainless steel wire like this stuff and then made their own coils. Just wrap it around something round, like the barrel of a pen, until you get your desired length. Its thin enough and flexible enough so it could to work. Does anyone know the gauge size of the standard lava lamp coil?

That's not a bad idea, really! Also, if we wanted to do a group buy, there are companies who will make these. I got very close to sealing the deal, but then realized I'd have no use fro 100 coils.

Here was my thread on the subject (I believe the gauge was noted in there somewhere): http://oozinggoo.ning.com/forum/topics/the-coil-the-coil

I occasionally make my own stainless steel springs. The quality of wire plays a major factor in the viability of the spring. The wrong type of stainless steel wire will bend when inserted into a globe and become football shaped.

I follow this method: Make your own springs in seconds
