today i bought a purple glitter grande for $25. it was supposed to be new in box. i looked at it in a dark garage and it looked fine.it was clear. when i got it home and put a blub in it it went cloudy. there is a filming on the glass and tons of little bits of white fluffy moldy looking stuff floating around. it still seems to be sealed. i cant barley even see the glitter and what glitter i can see doesnt even look to be silver. it looks irridescent. i thought all grandes had silver glitter? and i didnt even know a glitter could go cloudy! ive been scearching og for and hour and have not found any info...HELP PLEASE!!!!
this is my 3rd bad buy in a row! geez...(hand smacks forehead) :(

okay so i got it open and decovered that it was indeed originally blue! it was completely sealed. when i got the cap off the underside of the seal was coated in a thick blue slime and covered in shiny silver glitter. also the cap code is if for blue. so somehow when it went bad it turned from blue to purple and the shine dissovled off the glitter...actually i think most of the glitter completely dissovled lol cuz there was hardly any in there. weird huh? lol.
MM, mine doesnt a plug like ive seen others in pics have. it just has a thin black piece of rubber. i guess the glitters were different. do you think this is sufficent to seal reseal it? sould i use some marine sillicone/epoxy or something on it too?
oh annnnnnnnd....hubs just ordered my goo kit and the aqua dye pack :D...shipping was around $18.
Be careful with that aqua dye, Tiff...just use a LITTLE bit, or it will turn sea green, teal, or even darker! I found that out the hard way. :p I have one wide-mouth globe that I've modded, and I sealed it with a sheet of thick plastic and a strong rubber band. The top bows a little bit, but there's a lot of space under the cap so it doesn't matter.
Oh, and goo kits are now $5 cheaper than they were. :) You can save on shipping by buying more at a time. When I ordered 3 quarts, I think the shipping was about what it was for 1 quart.
okay so i went out today to buy everything else i will need to goo kit this grande. i went to every hardware store in our area and didnt find anything close to a sutiable coil. im thinking of linking several 52oz coils together...think it will work??. also im at a loss when it comes to bulbs. i looked for a 100wt R20 to run on a dimmer but it seems no one sells them. the closest thing to size and shape i could find was a 60wt hallogen. still picked up a dimmer though....what kind of bulb do you use in your kitted grande?...i did find a good replacement for the cap. a thick rubber pipe cap with a hose clamp on it. i did have to shave a bit off the inside rim with a razor blade to get it to slip over the top of the globe but it fits really tight and i dont even think i will need the hose clamp part. seem much more tight and secure then trying to recrimp the flimsy metal lid. plus it supposed to create it own seal.
thanks guys! i will def be carefull with the dye!
jen thats a great idea :)
I have 2 grandes, one with a 100w R20 and one with a 75w R20 (all I could find locally). Globe colors are clear/black and blue/yellow. The blue/yellow flows good on both bases (takes longer to get going on the 75w) The clear/black only flows on the 100w. So a lower watt bulb may not be a problem. I don't have experience with gookits, but I remember others posting that they don't need a 100 watt bulb.
