Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Is this just REALLY bad luck, or all these new Lava Lamps just bad?

Hey, I've been trying to find a good lava lamp that ISN'T cloudy when I open it, but this is just impossible! I've bought 7 lamps the past week, and all have been cloudy! I work at Target, so it was easy to take it back and get another, but about the 5th time the Guest Service girl questioned if I was purposely ruining them. I told her, of course, no. She didn't believe me. I made her come to the lamp section and open one. Sure enough, it was cloudy. We opened the other 3, they were all cloudy. WHY CAN'T I GET A GOOD LAMP? D:

They are the Lava lite brand, some normal $20 ones and a couple mini Clearviews. Oh the irony, CLEARVIEW. >.>

The clearview base is also completely useless. I thought I'd keep one just for the base of my other lamp the same size, but the wax wasn't even halfway melted 4 hours later. On it's original base, it's bubbling after 20 mins.

So, the point of the topic, why are they allowed to make bad lamps? D:

Oh, if I can't snatch the purple wizard, is this an ok price for this one?  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lava-Lamp-Glitter-Wizard-Motion-lite-vintag...

$50 seems a little steep for a starting point IMO.

$50 + $21 to ship that wizard?  i'd pass.

i echo tiffany's sentiments about lava lite.  they are well aware of the cloudy lamp issue and work with you to get them replaced.  to be honest though, the lamps at target are small, cheaply made, and don't flow very well.  go for the 52oz lamps at spencer's and i think you'll be pleased.

Like Tiffany said, see if they'll let you check it BEFORE you buy it!

I've never had a wizard, but I had a regular glitter lamp that was low.  I dropped some of those clear, flat stones in there (like for aquariums) to raise the liquid level.  It worked really good and unless you looked straight down into it, couldn't even tell they were there.  Didn't hamper the glitter movement at all.

A wizard person could probably yay or nay this trick better than me though...

Better luck to you!

Tiffany,

What contact info do you use to get ahold of them?  I so want a clear globe to replace my mostly cloudy grande.

i must defend lava lite here...the very newest lamps they are making are fantastic. they have really stepped up quality. i have 4 new 52s and they are clear and beautiful!  i bought a grande a few months ago from amazon and it was cloudy so i called lavalite and had a chance to speak with someone there...the cloudy issue has been fixed and the only reason cloudy lamps are still being sold is that retailors are still trying to sell off the old stock before ordering new. they also sent me a brand new replacement grande which is just gorgeous! i suggest that if you want nice clear lamps spencers is the place to go. they (or mine at least) have newstock and displays and will even open the lamp box for you to show you its clear before you buy. or you can always order direct from lava lite which is what i will do when i buy another grande.

Thanks for the tip!

I just got a reply from the seller, he says the liquid when fully heated rises a bit over an inch to just right under the cap.

*places bid*

jonathan, at my local spencers the lavas are kept near the front of the store and all the really naughty stuff is kept in the back so if you dont venture to far back i think youll be safe lol ;)

ohhh...and good luck on the wizard!

bridget T,  this is how i contacted lava lite

http://www.lavalamp.com/LavaContactUs

i called and emailed and got a respones from both.

Oh good! Haha, I'll go there sometime this week then. :P

I was reading tiffanys respone about defending lava lites but something stuck out. You said lava lites and their retailers are selling off the cloudy lamps to make room for the new stock? So they know that they are selling off bad products to people? If I were them I would do another recall like the neons. Thats better to do that than to piss your customers off and subject them to replacement globe process or have to issue refunds What buisness does that?

well, some are cloudy and some are not.  lava lite doesn't hesitate to replace cloudy lamps, though.  it's suspect to not recall all of the "bad" stock, i agree.  hopefully if/when production comes back to the US, things will be different.

Dont get me wrong. I think everything is going in the right direction for them but I wish they would do some kind of an inspection before they go out to retailers. If they did that I think it limit the ammount of disappointed customers. I as a former retailer felt the frustration of this particular issue but the reality of the issue is that I'm probably referring to about a thousand lamps that they may have to go through and thats a lot of labor. So hopefully this year will be the start of many good lamps to come.

I lost the auction for that glitter wizard (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Wizard-Glitter-Lava-Lamp-15-tall-bl...)

:C

By one dollar too... ugh.
