Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Found oozinggoo.com when I was looking for ways to repair the Grande I picked up at CostCo a few years ago.  It's one of the Chinese made ones that has gone extremely cloudy and ceased to flow (going to try replacing the fluid one of these weekends).

It was here that I found out about really big Lava lamps.  I was bowled over by videos of the  Colossus lamps and really want to see if I could get one, I couldn't find them available anywhere so I wrote LavaLite.  I wanted to let this group know what I got this from Lava Lite today:

We have a special promo on the Colossus for serious buyers.   This will be the last time the Colossus will be seen.

Please see attached promo sheet with pricing included.

If you are interested please contact on my direct line at 630-496-6663.

Best regards,

Sadly these prices are outside of my discretionary funds, even though they include shipping.  I post it in hopes that someone here may be interested.

I like the base too, Loren.  And you're right, the bases slide easily.  Should help with your back -- hope it gets better soon.  And the Colossus definitely needs to come out of the corner.  In my opinion (biased, of course), they are the best furnishings in my home!

Thanks youze guys, I've come to terms with the base now, and i like it too. :) Oh, and the lamp is still in the corner (I like it there), but it's not all the WAY in the corner. I moved it out a little, so that it looks better.

Oh wow! Nice, Matt! That wasn't...the one that died, was it...? :( That must have been traumatic. What did you do with the base and cap?

Has anyone thought about trying these.

I fixed it for you Loren.  Now it goes to 111 . . . .

And here's how I marked the dimmer switch, with a white paint marker for the knob indicator:

A clear/red "big ole lava lite" was just delivered to me at work. They did not call first like they say they will,,,,

Gonna wrestle it into the suv with some help. fingers are crossed!

I'm into day 3 of the 5 day program that their quality manager suggested. So far, I get 2-3 hours of flow then it gets stuck. I'm not hopeful, but I'll see this through.

I think a purple/pink replacement is in my future.

So are you purple/yellow Colossus purchasers having any luck keeping a consistent flow going in your lamp?

My experience has been frustrating I have yet to have it flow for much more than one hour before it goes into what I call "melt down" mode.

I love this color combination but at this point I'm not sure it is worth the headache.

My purple/yellow is doing the same thing.  2 ish hours of flow and then stuck at the bottom.  I didn't have hope to begin with as I had already been running it like that over the weekend, but figure if I do what they say I have covered all my bases.

I'm not very hopeful either.  It's acting like my other china globe (green neon) where the goo doesn't like the coil, it blobs but no real flow.  I'll play with a 52oz lamp, not touching a colossus.

Starting the purple/pink tonight and hoping to see better behavior from it.  Send good lava thoughts :)

Its wed 2pm EST.

This is regarding the colossus lamp (yellow/clear with 300w bulb installed) i picked up 2nd hand and posted about earlier.

Your on your own regarding any mods you make to use a 300w bulb.

Its about 67-70 room temp and the lamp has been running since monday 8am.

I turn down the dimmer to 200w at night.

So far its used about 11.5Kwh of electricity. That's roughly 80 cents a day around here (Delaware).

----------

Right now its set at 240watts and i've been getting a real nice flow as far as i'm concerned.

I attached a few photos........

---------

The colossus is sitting on a heavy duty scrapped metal PC case.

I don't like the idea of sitting it on the carpet.

T Saviille,,,, is it running hot? Looks like a lot of stuff at the top. I don't know,,,asking for when i get mine running.

To be honest, i don't know exactly what you mean by 'hot'.
I have heard 'hot' described as having to much lava at the top and not enough at the bottom
(which seems subjective and/or according to preference if you ask me).

The bottom of the globe (neat the base) is about 98-100 degrees,The top of the globe is about 105-108 degrees.
Can you get this without using 300w bulb? i have no idea.

At these temps, the flow is consistent.....the lava is falling at a rate and rising at a rate such
that is keeps flowing without delay or getting 'jammed up and stopping' at one end or the other.

Personally, I like the lamp when its flowing like this.

Sending positive flow your way....

I'm pretty certain it is going to run beautifully just like Jim's. My clear/red has been running perfectly for many hours at a time. It's fantastic!
