Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I have heard several folks say they cleared their cloudy LL's simply by running them through

a Brita (or equivalent) water filtration pitcher and it works great!

So, instead of a Brita, I decided to give this one a try since it has much higher ratings:

This experiment is kind of expensive since I am sure to go through a few filters just for one

Grande lamp, so if it does not work, all you guys who say it does, are going to be in trouble :) LOL!

Can anyone confirm if the Miniworks EX is okay to use?  I can't find the non-EX model except for one seller on ebay for $142.  The EX model is only $80.  According to the Lava Library, you aren't supposed to use the EX model but everyone else seems to think they are okay.

I haven't used one, but I know some of those who have say do not use the carbon filter.  You want to filter out particles, not chemicals (the carbon is for filtering chemicals)  That being said, I don't know if the carbon filter is removable.

MSR Miniwoks X works great and uses a ceramic filter, no carbon. It's saved many lamps for me.

Isn't the EX model (in your link) the carbon version? The past version (non-EX) is the non carbon version, as I understand, and it isn't available anywhere. I just ordered the EX version and a non-EX replacement filter to effectively make it non-carbon. Gonna filter a few lamps including my dark, dreary B/Y grande. This will be the Grande's last chance before it gets goo kitted. After seeing Phishy Lava's grande goo kit yesterday, I'll be hard pressed NOT to kit it.

Where can I find the MSR Miniworks without the carbon filter?  I have 2 Grande's that I need to clear up.

Not sure. I couldn't find one. I went with the EX on my grande because it flowed badly anyway. Hard to say what effect it had but I added salt to liven up the flow. Works well now and its much clearer & brighter now. (Blue/yellow)
