Rough Service Bulbs?

Hi,

I would like to stock some 40w bulbs, and I saw some cheap packs on ebay with frosted golf ball bulbs listed as "rough service " bulbs.

They're supposed to work longer (2000hrs instead 1000) but no brand mentioned.

Anyone knows about them?

I've never heard that term in my life! But I want to see what that means, so I'm jumping in to this thread. :)

Rough service can mean different things, like for use in ceiling fans, RV's, harsh environments, etc.  Mainly anywhere there can be a lot of motion or vibration.

Usually it's a coated bulb (for strength) and a heavier filament. Dunno why they wouldn't work.

I'm worried about the heat.

I don't know if a bigger filament produce more heat or not...

I don't think they put out anymore heat than a regular bulb of the same wattage.  Here is what I found on the internet. 

What are they?

Rough service lamps are designed to be resistant to vibration and other external stresses that can damage the filament of a regular lamp, causing failure. They are available in a variety of wattages and finishes. They are known for their durability and long life as compared to regular incandescent bulbs.

How do they work?

Rough service lamps function identically to regular incandescent lamps, but generally have additional wire within the glass enclosure that serves to protect and support the filament.

Where are they used?

Rough service lamps are ideal for use in any area where bumps, shocks, or vibrations are a primary concern. Some examples would be garage door openers, lamps near machinery, lamps near doors that slam regularly, or those used anywhere else where early failure is an issue due to a harsh usage.

 

So, it appears to me that the only difference is the extra wire/wires that support the filament.  If you buy the wattage you need, they should just be more sturdy and last longer, not generate more heat.    Libby

Thank Heavens!  I would hate to appear a complete idiot on here, worse than I already have.  :-)   But it just made sense.  Maybe we all should use that stronger bulb.

 Just make sure they are A-15 bulbs. Im not sure if a golfball bulb would work properly or even fit. I know some of the new G sized bulbs will not screw into the base because the neck is not long enough.

Never heard about A15 bulbs, I guess it's an USA stuff.
