When I was younger, I had an original lamp given to me by my grandma. It didn't flow and has since been trashed (SIN! I KNOW!). I then had one in the early 90s but recently bought one for my fiance for christmas and it has sparked a new obsession in me!
I've done a lot of research but I'm curious: What brands to you all collect? Do you go for vintage or currently produced models? Do you order online or find them in stores?
I don't know enough yet to specialize a collection so I guess I'm looking for pointers on where to start. What are some essentials I should be looking for? Unfortunately, it seems many lamps are only available over seas (I'm in the US). Those Mathmos candle-heated lamps look sick, does anyone know if we can get them over here?

Here's mine. It literally JUST started flowing like this. Let me know if you can't see it cause it's posted to facebook and i don't know how that works here.

Yeah I'll have to post another once I get home. My boyfriend put it on his page and his settings wont let me share.
I get almost all of mine on eBay or through members here. I only really buy Lava Lite brand (the stuff made in the US), and usually just vintage.
Hey I'm a newbie too!! My experience is swapping liquid and goo from one lamp to another. Making one myself is my favorite DIY project thus far!! I've seen a couple of people on here that seem to be into customizing their own bases and what not. Just search for customs in the search bar. DR.WHAT?! has made some pretty awesome ones, check his profile out! I like his metallic hack the best!!

Nope, won't let me view it :-/ I'm a newbie and maybe am just overly excited by a new obsession but I can't wait to start making my own lamps. I'm an artist and have so many cool ideas for base and cap customizations. Do many people in the community do that as well? I haven't seen much in that regard...
Yes, most of us have seen/heard of those. They are semi-rare, but not overly valuable. There are pics of them on this site.

Has anyone heard of a floor lamp with a lava lamp built in? A friend on Facebook said she has one and I'm trying to get pics (and convince her to sell it to me lol)
I just did a search on the site to see some pics, they look really neat! I hope she'll sell it to me.
pretty much the same way I do it and have come up with some nice lamps.

ebay, craigslist, goodwill, thrift shops, flea markets, spencers, anywhere and everywhere. im always on the lookout for lava.
Yep, I have one too. The lamp part is my primary light for my bedroom. The lava part flows pretty decent for a knock off brand, no its not a 90s lava but its not bad. I've had much worse.
