Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hello everyone, me again, with more questions, never any solutions! Today I received a Lava Lite Colour Changing Lamp, bought off Ebay. Works by LEDs and what I think is a heating coil / element. There were no instructions as such, just basic details. It has a button on the front which I can press to change the lamps effects. I can either have colour changing, single colour or colour changing strobe, I think. Unfortunately it appears that it will only colour change 3 of the colours in a sequence, and not all the colours it could / can make. But I suppose my question regards the strobing feature, does anyone know of any easy way to make the strobe slower, its pretty fast to be honest, disco material! I've looked online and cannot find this lamp anywhere, so I'm guessing it's a prototype.

Many thanks

James

Not at all my friend, I got it for only £15, inc P & P, so I was very happy. However, it's been on now for a while, 4 hours, and there's not a great deal of movement going on. It keeps threatening to go, and threatening, but doesn't move. And bugger me, it's just blobbed, the first time I've seen it do that for a while. I'll attach a photo of it 4 hours on. It's the one on the top right in the first picture

Cheers

Wow, awesome deal!!  That is too bad it seems to be flowing funny, maybe a good run will tame the wax.  Very cool lamp though, keep us posted on weird behaviors/magnificent flows as the day goes by.

Will do, no dramas, it will be fun to see how it goes. Even though it's not moving a great deal yet, the changing colours are cool. And I'll give it a while yet!

Cheers

Hey dude, I would if I could, any advice / help?

Cheers

LL color changing lamp? what be this?...never seen one before....better pic? ;)

No lala, it's not a smart astro, there's some pics on the previous page. It looks to me like a Chinese replica of LL lamps that you see on uk eBay but they come in weird boxes. This one seems like the same packaging tube lava lite uses.

This lamp showing up is no surprise.  With incandescent light technology facing an uncertain future Mathmos and L.L. have both been looking at the heating element alternatives.  Some think the Mathmos Smart Astro is dead and has been discontinued and that is not true.  While it is true it is presently unavailable in a conversation I had with Mathmos a few months back I was told it was going to be available again this year.  I suspect their first couple of production runs yielded some issues that needed to be addressed, but in no way is this type of lamp technology going to disappear.

Perhaps Lava LIte sold a few via ebay UK to test Mathmos reaction to a heating and lighting technology that is similar.  I'm pretty sure that neither company wants the other thinking about patent infringement, etc.

Either way you are going to see more of this type thing.  The funny thing is that it won't save any energy to run a lamp this way.

Yea, total null on the energy savings.  Makes you wonder if it might become even more inefficient! Again, I really hope they think about their older lamps in whatever route they take, I want something to be available to changeover my older 90's lamps and newer grandes!

That's not surprising. They're not the best at self promotion.

Interesting that it says "Motion lamp" on the box and not "lava lamp".

James, can you post the eBay link and/or better pic of the box?

hmm interesting. I emailed Susan at lava lite to inquire about these. I asked her for some info and if these will be seen on bigger sizes in the future. It seems odd to me that they don't show that product anywhere on their website but lava lite is notorious for just releasing product with no announcement.

Hi Erin, yes, I'm not a massive tech head, but here it is;

Not going to be able to post any more photos until tomorrow Im afraid

Ps...It's still not really doing much, other than changing colour!

Cheers all

Wait, so is there lava in the lamp or is it just a plastic mold that looks like lava? It's odd - the eBay link doesn't really say much about the lamp, or show pictures except for the one generic one.
