2nd goo kitted grande and still no good flow

So I got my first goo kit for Christmas! But I can not get it to cycle or flow correctly I used 55-60ml of surf and distilled water. I called MT and they sent me new goo and surf but still the same flow the second time around. Lamp has be on for 10 hours at 100% power on a new heritage grande base and the bulb is good. Does anyone have any suggestions of what might going on?

Heidi thanks for the info. MT told me to check the temp of the water and it read about 128 deg. MT told me that 115 to 125 deg. is the perfect temp for optimum flow of the goo he also told me that 130 deg is too hot. My goo started to turn clear by the 8th or 9th hour of running the lamp so I think it's getting hot enough. Lava lamps can be finicky... sometimes I have success and sometimes not.

I think when it's clear it is too hot, before mine was dyed it was flowing, and it was a milky color.

From what I have been reading their goo kits are different from batch to batch.

I haven't used MT goo in about a year.  Back then I did many globes

and has no issues with the wax other than just fine tuning the surf.

The lamps I did for myself and friends are flowing fine.  Now I want

to do a Giant, I have a clean vessel and ready to go.

With the latest feedback on MT's wax, perhaps I will do Kirk's

Glitter instead.  It takes allot of work to do a 250oz giant/grande.

It's heavy and it took me and my lady to do this with oven mitts.

I would be disappointed if I spent $50 and went to all the work to

end up with a dud.  Then you have to clean it up and start over

again.

Or, you could end up with an awesome lamp !  I guess I'm concerned

with their 'wax issues'

If the wax is turning clear, you are correct in saying that it's getting hot enough. This indicates a problem with the density of the wax relative to the liquid. Maybe someone can relay this info. to MT so they can fix the issue. Regardless, it's great that you lava scientists can adapt and get your lamps flowing!

I got all of my recent lamps to flow but they do need more heat then Mt is admitting to.  The problem I'm having is that I really can't blame the wax because my last 2 lamps have had coil issues.  The goo only adheres to 1/2 of the coil and I end up having to throw something else in there, i.e., a piece of the stainless steel screen that comes with the kit.  However, I do not think this is a goo problem because when the lamp was in it's original LL state I had the same problem with their lava.  So in all fairness I can't blame the goo.  I also noticed that with the cooler temps in my home, I have to run my kits a bit hotter.  I still do get awesome flow though and really enjoy them......

Carol I'm glad your lamps are running good for you wish I could say that about me grande. MT did say something about the the out side temp being so cold here in northern pa but my house is plenty warm and all of my other lamps are flowing just fine. But do know that lava lamps are sensitive to temp changes and air flow however I don't think that is the issue at my house.

I think on Monday I will give Kim a call at MT and explain to him whats going on with these goo kits see if I get any kind of resolution. He seems like I nice guy and I'm sure he would like some input from us goo heads.

Definitely call him Tim!!  He wil probably offer you fresh goo, but from what I've heard, even when fresh goo is tried, it's the same issue.  I know some of my kits flow great with my 60 watt bulb dimmed to a tad above half, but 2 of them i have to go almost full blast to get anything half decent.  i wish they would go back to their old goo formula!!!

I thought clear was too hot.  When mine turned clear it wouldn't flow

Good news my lamp is flowing! So I must have got a good batch this time and I did not add salt. However the flow was good with one coil but when I added a second coil it really took off! But it does need to ran on full power to achieve this amazing flow. I'm still gonna talk to MT about the issues and ask them about the formula change. I will post pics of my grande flowing.

I talked to Kim at MT yesterday and he said that there has been no goo formula changes at all. But he did say that they make two different kinds of goo one is for the smaller lamps that is lighter and the other is heavier for their really big lamps like 7-10 foot tall lamps WOW!! He said that sometimes they grab the wrong goo because there is no difference how they look on the self. So the wrong goo sometimes gets shipped to the wrong costumer and that he said that is the problem. Kim also said that the screens that come with the kits are the best for optimum flow because of the wide coverage for the goo to break up on. Hope this helps clear up are goo kit problems!
