Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hello everyone,

Long time lurker first time caller. I've been having trouble with my gookit goo sticking to the globes no matter what I do. I'm following the tutorial on this site (thank you). I've even gone a step beyond the bottle brush scrub, using a set of small aquarium cleaning magnets with a piece of wash cloth attached on the inside. Some I've also cleaned the inside of the globe with brakclean (perc) then did the hot soapy water scrub again with a fresh piece of wash cloth. Then per instructions I'm mixing up the included surfactant with a small amount of distilled water. Replace coil that's been cleaned with hot soapy water. Completely coat the inside of the globe with it, dumping the remainder into a four cup measuring cup. Warm up the goo until melted and use the funnel and tube to slowly add it to the globe. I did filter the wax through a piece of paper towel since it was full of grit and bits of who knows what. (Not impressed with that ). I then let it sit for a couple hours. I add enough distilled water to the measuring cup with the reaming surf to equal 4 cups, then use it to fill the globe. I'm using standard 40 watt appliance bulbs with dimmers. I've done five 32 ounce and one 52 ounce globes so far. Every single one of these buggers is sticking at the bottom. Either just around the outside bottom or directly to the bottom of the globe. A couple of these I've redone a few times and get the same results. What am I doing wrong my fellow goo heads? I'm out of ideas.

Thanks,
Devon

do you sue boiling water to clean the globe with Dawn>?

Use a bottle brush?

Try just using a water bath to melt the goo

Yep. Boiling water with dawn. Bottle brush, boiling water rinse. More boiling water with dawn, Bottle brush again. Rinse, rinse, rinse etc. I even did one more. I had 3-4 inches of water(with surf) in the globe after doing the surf coat like we discussed. I got the wax up to just barely melted (113°) using boiling water bath. I then poured it keeping the tube just under the surface of the water. The wax never even touched bottom. I let I cool. Topped off the water, fired it up. The wax started to stick to the very bottom closest to the bulb at 111-112°.

I'm starting to believe either I've done something to this wax while heating it, or it's off on its own. I have made my own goo using gulf wax and perc. No sticking issues with it ever. It just never lasted for very long. I wish it did.

Is it too late for glitter??? Lol

I may end up doing that. I just hate to bug him this late after the sale. My wife ordered it for me as a gift just before Christmas (with my credit card.. what a gal..lol)

None the less I do truly thank you once again for your guidance. It has been very helpful.

your welcome

I just got a gookit in the mail a week ago.. I cleaned both bottles by putting a tablespoon of dawn in the bottle, poured boiling water in there, bottle brush it, pour it out while still very hot, use gloves cause it's hot! Did that twice. The spring was in there when I did it.. the bottles are spotless. I did nothing special to coat the bottle before I poured the wax, it was just a super clean bottle, no surfactant. Poured the wax in, let it harden in the freezer, then poured the distilled water and added the surfactant. Works perfect.
