J/k. No idea. They do seem kinda weird. Then again, there was this whole fluffy/furry phase everyone was going through (teen girls) about 8 years back. Maybe less.

These, along with the LavaGami (think Japanese paper lantern in lava lamp shape) and the various "party lights" (police beacon, strobe light, etc.) are Lava attempting to get some more business in this horrible economy by offering more things that might be popular with the same crowds who tend to want lava lamps these days - teens and college students. Do they suck? I think so. But they ARE possibly helping to keep Lava afloat. So they might be a good thing, in a way.

Lava has some strange new things that I can't imagine many people wanting...
These furry lamps, the tiffany lamps, end ups, and all the not very cool party lights.
The options that I would never even think of buying outnumber the lamps that I would actually want (if they were better).

It's all about profit. It's more profitable making that junk stuff in mass than it is to make a quality product for just a little more. Most of those things aren't worth the boxes they are packed in.

Thing to remember is that we, as collectors, think like collectors. "How could anyone want this junk? We want LAVA!" True, WE do. But sadly, the public tends to want funky things that light up. These days, just about anything will do. These items suck, but they sell, at least in the US. Popular for dorm rooms, I'm sure. Also may be why the public-at-large doesn't complain about bad lava flow - college kids don't care. It lights up, it blobs a little bit, it's a lava lamp. Unlike in the past, when these were home decor items, and the average buyer really paid attention to the hypnotizing lava motion.
