Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

(Edit: I had to add more chlorine to make it go clear - 1 ml for an Astro bottle was more than enough. Less could do.)

Some people have had success with bleaching fluids to clear. Despite concerns about lava and coil, I want to experiment. I just  What kind of bleach do people use?

- Chlorine or chlorine-free?
- Product name?

- Active ingredient(s)?

I just tried chlorine (Sodium Hypochlorite) on blue Mathmos fluid, but it turned darker and into indigo!

If its a newer Schylling Lava Lamp, yo can just replace the fluid with distilled water and some (SURF as required)

Well this is really good to know actually, I've been struggling with my indigos turning clear!

You should just use printer ink to re-color it - or some water soluble color (not food color in my experience, you get sediments in the top). Ink can make it a little hazy tho, but not much.

It's Mathmos. I haven't heard of anyone successfully replacing newer Mathmos fluids - it only flows in big blobs that don't break up unless you add original fluid to the mix.

It don't want to buy countless bottles of clear/plum to get clear fluids. There must be a way. Maybe I should turn on all my 365nm UV lamps and shoot the light right into the fluid...

Did you use TritonX as a surfactant?

I just got my hands on Triton X-100, before I used SLES. So far no success, used 5 drops of Triton (small drops) in a Mathmos Jet bottle with wax from a new bottle. Still just one big round blob going up and down. I'll try to use more Triton X-100, but at some point I think the wax color will start to leak into the fluid like it did previously with too much SLES.

I believe its a combination of SLES and Triton with Triton being only @1%

1% of about 500ml fluid is 5ml. That's a lot of drops. I now put in a few ml's of Triton X-100 (along with a few ml's of SLES), that worked! I even have to replace some of the fluid because of too much surfactant now. Well, now I learned that Triton can do the trick. It seems I can now make my own master fluid for new Mathmos bottles, just need to measure it precisely. As long as the wax color doesn't leak into the fluid. Thanks.

it will take some searching,..but somewhere on here someone posted a recipe for mathmos master fluid
