Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Just a heads up to collectors, this month marks the 60th anniversary of Crestworth/ Mathmos, and to mark the occasion Mathmos recently announced there would be 5 ‘collaboration’ lamps designed with recognised names in fashion, music, etc. in a limited edition of 600 for each lamp, with the first due to ‘drop’ from mid-day tomorrow and another lamp each week thereafter.

Unfortunately this seems a bit of a ‘fleecing’ at £130 per lamp, also since it doesn’t seem we will get to see the lamps ahead of time and I doubt many have deep enough pockets to buy every lamp it might be difficult to know when to ‘bite’. it would be pretty galling to buy the first lamp, only for a much better one to come along later, by which point you have overspent, or holding out for a better lamp only to be disappointed.

You can buy glass etching stuff on Amazon, I’d considered doing patterns before (like snowflakes or something on a blue bottle for Christmas) but never got around to it.

I have a feeling the clear/plum will be a bust, but I’m not willing to sacrifice another clear bottle as they are all limited editions. I think it will need a fair amount of contrast to work, potentially blue/pink?  I’ll see what the new one looks like when it arrives first.

I got my shipping email last night, and it came with advice about preserving the coating on the lamp, so it seems the frosting is a coating (perhaps like the chrome or neo?) rather than an actual etching.

I suppose in this case if you truly hated the bottle but loved the stand and the colourway (on any of the limited edition ones with the different bottles) there is the potential to remove the coating but retain the unique colourway - Neo is fairly straightforward, I've never tried the chrome (and never will, I love the chrome).  My gut is going with a chrome-esque coating. Of course this would completely tank the resale value if you are concerned about such things, but the potential is there I suppose.

I am still incredibly curious about etching a bottle, whether the entire bottle or in some kind of pattern.  I first thought about etching whilst staring at my Pretty Green limited bottle and thinking I really liked the different logo at the top.  I'll have a think after I've seen the new bottle.

Will have to see when it arrives. I've never had a cloudy lamp but from pictures I think this will be a different type of look. More looking through uniform frosted glass than murky.

Interesting to see experimenting with effects created by coatings applied to the glass, although to be honest I’m struggling to ‘unsee’ this as a clouded/ worn out bottle.

Not for me, I think, certainly not at the going rate…

That’s interesting, I ordered just before 12 and only got a dispatch email this morning, also no advice email for me tho. If you get a chance and are happy to paste it here would be interesting to see what it says.

Keen to see how its made now, I always remove the Neo coting also. I've never had a perfect metallic bottle however.

It didn't actually come from the main mathmos address, so it may have ended up in your junk mail.

Here you go:

"Thank you for supporting the launch of Mathmos X Sabine Marcelis , the 60th anniversary collaboration Astro lava lamp.

Advice to take care of your limited-edition Astro:

  • The coating on this bottle is very delicate; please take great care when unpacking the lamp. Avoid rotating the bottle on the base, as this can cause scratches in the bottle coating. • Be mindful of jewellery when handling the bottle to avoid damaging the coating.
  • The coating of the bottle is very fragile, only clean coated bottles with a dry soft cloth.• The Astro lava lamp is handmade in Britain, and we’re very proud of this. Each piece is unique and may have slight variations, marks or blemishes due to the nature of the handmade process. This is to be expected and not considered a fault.

As a reminder, each Mathmos 60th collaboration Astro is strictly limited to 600 per product, so you now own a special part of Mathmos history.

We hope you enjoy the limited-edition lava lamps as much as we enjoyed creating them.

Kind regards, Mathmos Team"

Thanks for that, yes, just spotted it in my spam from someone called Cindy. It does sound a lot like the metallic coating warnings.

Ok... the new one is kinda disappointing, however, the Gen X'er in me is thinking "omg Duran Duran!  Cool!"  And then I scrolled down and saw it was a chrome bottle...

*sigh*

The base/top is kinda (very) meh... but I love the chrome bottle :(

It's kinda weird that they didn't stick it on a vinyl type base/top actually.

"In celebration of Mathmos' 60th anniversary, we have collaborated with global music legends Duran Duran to design a limited edition of our classic Astro lava lamp. This limited edition of only 600 worldwide has a sleek silver metallic silhouette when turned off and is transformed when switched on; the constantly changing pink lava magically glows through the metallised glass. We have etched the signatures of each of the four band members into the cap and one of Duran Duran's early logos into the base. Duran Duran and Mathmos are a great fit as both take their names from the cult 1960s film Barbarella, and there is a track, "Lava Lamp", on Duran Duran's "Pop Trash" album."

As an aside... The first two lamps are now sold out.  The page now has a limit of 1 bottle per person, I'm wondering if someone went nuts and bulk bought a load for resale.

I really like the bottle but that’s it so not worth £130 for me personally, especially when I have metallics already. I also have no idea who these guys are :-D

I think your right on the bulk buying. I bought two of the last one but only because I like it. Both are in perfect condition, no blemishes on the bottles at all and the effect is really good.

I think 2 would be ideal as sometimes people display them in pairs.

Exactly. Well that was quick, the third edition is sold out already.

Duran Duran fans perhaps? maybe they put something out on social media or something.

Echo the sentiment of nice bottle, but otherwise ‘meh’.

Shame they won’t introduce more colours for the metallic, it’s down to a single colour option now, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it quietly dropped completely in the not too distant future.

Kind of wish I had got a red while they were still available…
