What happens if you unscrew a vintage topper?

I have a few vintage lamps where the screw on toppers need a touch up with gold paint or whatever is recommended. But I don't want to mess up the globes. Is this okay or just be careful not to touch the glass?

I like your idea. Cracking the cap isn't what I had in mind and this would work great. NICE lamp! What flowers are these? Thanks!
