"I've actually considered doing an experiment with the new lamps after observing the results of the old one on the dimmer, and how each lamp has it's own flow, and none are exactly the same.  It seems like the cooler the lamps the more…"

Clinton W Salvato replied to Clinton W Salvato's discussion 24 old lava lamp behavior
"Thanks Keith, the dimmer will arrive tomorrow, and will connect the lamp to it and give it a test.  I'll let it heat at full brightness then dim it to help keep it cooler.  Yes that lamp has had it's use plus since I got it…"

Keith replied to Clinton W Salvato's discussion 24 old lava lamp behavior
"Yes that dimmer should do the trick.   Wax reacts differently in different lamps even when everything looks the same.  Maybe physical bulb size makes it sit higher or lower in the base, maybe the socket in the base isn't exactly…"

Mr MaGoo replied to Clinton W Salvato's discussion 24 old lava lamp behavior
"That's because the new one's have no flow.  They have China flow, one blob up on blob down.  You will never see a china lamp drop a blob from top to bottom, simultaneously as a blob stretches from bottom to top!  Oh, and…"

"The main thing I see is it's getting too hot.  You can use an in-line dimmer on the cord to reduce heat from the bulb.  "

Profile Information

Something Interesting About Me:
I like retro tech and new tech alike, Have decided to get into Lava Lamps more since I've had an older one for more than 20 years.

Just filling in some basic things for now.
Where I Live:
Daytona Beach, Florida US
My First Lava Lamp was:
Second Hand from a thrift store when I lived in Virginia. I have no information on the lamp as far as company who made it or mode, other than the manufacture date of Aug 21, 1996 still faintly visible on the base bottom. I do know it takes a 40w bulb, and either 16, or 17 inches. Black finish Astro shape, but the cap is more pointed like a rocket then current lamps today. Orange liquid with either light yellow or white wax. Could be discolored from age.
My Collection Includes this many Lava Lamps:
aboutg 9 lamps for now.
My Favorite Lava Lamp is:
I would say my old Lamp, just because it's been with me through so much, and while it still works, is starting to show it's age. Can't really run it like I used to before the wax becomes a mess and breaks apart.
