Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

So I was just curious and wondered what assembly issues people have had with the Neo.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the Neo but I loved the colour options so has no choice and decided to take the plunge after watching the official Mathmos assembly video on You tube ( I did not buy the wall light version ) but at 1 minute into the video the top goes on and it just gently slots into place, or does it?!

My Neo arrived I was so excited until I tried putting it together my experience was NOTHING like in the video, oh well must be a one off.

I’ll order another and see what happens, second Neo arrived, now this one is worst than the first, the sharp edges have ripped through the nasty coating despite being super careful.

I wanted 1 lamp and 1 of each colour bottle so I could change them around when I fancied something different.

This is clearly not going to be an easy task and it’s going to damage to the bottles in the process.

If these colour options were available in Lunar, Astro and Astro Baby bottles I would have bought them instead.

Has anyone peeled the film off? I’m so temped lol !!!

Hello Lava head UK.

I found the initial assembly a bit confusing at first, but just make sure you put the the metal cap on the bottle first, then place the bottle in the base whilst at the same time making sure the screw part clips in it's housing.  There is just a knack to it.  It becomes easy when you've done it a few times.  You do have to be careful and not turn the bottle around when it's sat in the base otherwise you can scratch the shatterproof coating.

Regarding the coating.  Yes I have taken it off two of my bottles because I didn't like the look of it.

At the top of the bottle approx 1cm under the screw cap I sliced into the coating all the way around with pair of extremely sharp hairdressing scissors. (Please be careful with sharp instruments).  I then scrapped the coating  down with the blades all around until I reached the lip of the bottle.  Then with my fingers clasped all around the bottle I rolled the coating off in a downward motion until it was all at the bottom of the bottle.  Think of this motion as like putting a condom on when you roll it down with your fingers until it's at the base of your penis.  Sorry to sound crude, but that is the only way i can describe it.   I was not able to get the coating off from underneath the bottle, but thats no problem as you can't see that part anyway.  Like i said it is fiddly, but it works and now my neo bottles are crystal clear.  Hope this helps and let me know if it works for you.

Regards.

Hi,

Welcome to the site and thank you for taking the time to reply.

I followed the instructions to the letter and watched the official video online, but it just wouldn't fit together properly.

Credit to Mathmos they replaced the base & cap after seeing photos, however the 2nd cap had a screw missing from inside and a bent flange inside which caused more damage, a 3rd cap was sent which is fine, so out of 2 bases and 3 tops I got one functional lamp.

This really surprised it seems quality control standards have fallen dramatically which is pretty sad.

If your charging a premium price you have to deliver a premium product.

I specifically asked Mathmos about removing my bottles coating and was told it was an integral part of the design and without it the wax would overheat, I thought this did sound a bit ridiculous.

All my bottles flow great apart from 2 Violet / Pink ones they melt and that's it, they will be going back for sure.

May I ask what colours you bought and how do the the " peeled " bottles flow, have you noticed any difference.

Regards.

Hello again.

Sorry you have had problems with your lamp.  I agree that there should not be any issues when you pay premium prices.

That said, Mathmos will always put right any problems you have and I always find their customer service excellent.

I did have a problem with my Neo lamp. It was emitting a very slight electrical charge when I touched the metal parts.  I sent it back to them and I recieved a brand new base with no further problems.

My bottle colours are Violet/Turquoise and Yellow/Orange.  Both the peeled bottles seem to be working well.

I also apologise for my duplicate reply.  I don't know what I did there.

Regards.

Still haven’t used my Orange /Yellow bottle yet but the Blue / Turquoise , Violet / Turquoise & Red / Red are my faves so far. And I agree I’ve had great customer service when an issue has been bought to their attention.
