Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hi,

I just got my first Crestworth.

It's a Telstar Living Jewel.

I've got few questions:

- How do you remove the cap? (is it glued?)

- About 1cm of liquid is missing, what can I put in it to get it level?

- I don't see so much Living Jewel bottles, is it rarer that Glitterlite or else?

Thanks

They are glued. I just use a hair dryer on the cap and that looses them. Just careful u don't get it too hot to fast. As for the other I don't know sorry

Hi Astralav,

The chrome cap is screwed on to the bottle.

I would not try to top up the liquid level - it should rise when warmed up.

The Living Jewel bottles are fast flowing with large silver bits, sometimes with coloured bottoms on the bottle.

The Glitterlite bottles are slow moving and generally smaller glitter - often more than one size. The liquid is coloured.

So: screwed, glued? :-)

Simon, I found one of your picture:

Are all bottles the same?

So Metal cap is glued to a plastic cap, then plastic cap is screwed to the bottle?

Mine is a living jewel painted red and blue at bottom.

Level doesn't change when hot (still miss a little less than 1cm at top after 2hrs running)

its a beautiful lamp...congrats :)

i know nothing of glitter lamps at all... but if i owned this beauty i think i would just leave it alone. a tiny bit of missing fluid does not detract from its gorgeousness imo ;D

The fast flowing, larger flakes Crestworth bottles were solvent based - one giveaway is that the flakes of glitter rise to the top when the lamp is switched off and cold. I would advise against opening one of these, but if you do, do it outdoors, not in a confined space. One solvent used was Trichlorotriflouroethane (I think, could have been Trichlorotriflouroethylene). Even if you do open it, it is unlikely that you will find a suitable solvent to top it up with now as most fully halogenated hydrocarbons have been banned under the Montreal Protocol. Distilled water will just sit on top, it is not miscible with the solvent, and is much lighter than the solvent. It is best left as it is, since the solvent is volatile, if you open it and don't reseal it fully, you will lose more solvent through evaporation.

Yes, all the flakes are on the top when off.

When I saw the pictures on the add, I thought the lamp was out of order and I planned to change it for a lava type, but I was very pleased to see it works perfectly. The only thing that annoy me is the 1cm missing fluid (I guess it is not perfectly sealed even if there was no drop when I turned it upside down before start it).

But it is really nice, especialy in the dark, where the flakes project some kind of Aurora Boreal on the wall!

the Living jewels normaly turn up with the larger jet size tops ( yours has the nordic style top ) if you use a jet type there wont be such a large gap showing.  if you plan to top the fluid up then idealy use living jewel fluid. the fluid level when youve got a jet top placed on the bottle will be just above the rim of the top,

also only use a 25 watt bulb as 40watt will over heat the fluid and over time the sliver coating on the flakes will disapear, if your concerned if the bottle is leaking then sniff around the black T top where its glued, youll soon know if theres a strong odour.

Personal it be alot easyer to get the Jet size silver top than trying to remove the old T shape bottle top, they were glued on due to the solvent used ,

Hi Johnny,

are you sure about the top? Because all Telstar I saw have the same top as Cosmos or Nordic.

I can't find a picture of a Living Jewel Telstar anywhere.

I would love to find some Living Jewel fluid, but that will be tough, except if I buy another bottle (that won't be much easier).

So I think I won't touch it and enjoy it like it is right now.

Here is a picture of the lamp in the dark:

yep the telstar bases like yours used the jet caps as well, the silver ones had a black  trim on the edge of the base , they would be the later telstars / living jewels around the time they launched the nordic de-luxe ( aka jet shaped lamp )

Maybe I have a rare model.

This is an "export" model, as it got a "Euro plug" (it's genuine, not modified later by someone).

Do you have picture of other Telstar Living Jewel?

Any tips for replacing the bulb in a Crestworth Glitterlite? I've finally removed my bottle with great difficulty... now it's almost impossible with regular human sized hands to get at the bulb?? They didn't make these lamps very user friendly.
