Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

This weird wax buildup has occurred on the bottom of one of my 17.5 inch Clearviews and it is also beginning to happen to one of my 14.5 inch Clearviews also. It does not harm the flow of the lamp, but I'm concerned that it will eventually all solidify and stop working. Any thoughts?

That's puzzling, i haven't see that before - its not like it is not getting hot enough as the top of the wax is fine.

My only suggestion would be to super heat the wax in a attempt to try and re combine it as what may have happened is its a slightly off batch and something is not combining the wax together as it should.

hopefully others on hear may be able to shed some light on it.

I would say you are either not getting enough heat to fully melt down all the constituent parts of the lava or your lava is going bad--old lava starts to separate into a white residue that sticks to the spring and bottom of the globe. If you are running a 25Watt bulb, try using a 40W. I use them in all of my Clearviews and they run great. I would consider using dimmer cords too just to be safe. That would enable you to custom tune your lamp to the proper heat range and no higher. Amazon sells dimmer cords in black and white at good prices.

That's wax sticking to the site of the glass globe and is pretty common with Lava Lite lamps nowadays. It's not supposed to do that, but once it's started, there's no fixing it.

So what is the eventual outcome? Is it all going to stick, or will it remain usable? It currently works brilliantly even with the buildup.

Get ready for rebuild.  My be the cheap spring material fixing to start breaking down.  A spring change might be in your future.

The only problem with wax is that it requires a bit more heat to melt than goo. If you can get enough heat into the lamp to melt the wax residue sticking to your glass, it will go back into solution and remix with the goo. I have done exactly that by dumping out at least half the liquid(you can save it to put back). I try to leave about a quarter inch of liquid above the settled goo at the bottom to force everything to mix. Then run the lamp that way--it will heat up faster and hotter. Keep the top cap on the bottle to hold in the heat. You'll need to stay by the lamp because it will heat up quickly. When everything melts, pick the bottle up and swirl the contents to make sure everything has been remixed...check underneath to be certain all that white residue is melted too. Swirl the contents as many times as you need to insure that mixing is complete. Then turn off the lamp and let everything cool down and settle into one mass again.  Once everything is cold, add back the liquid you saved and give it a run again. You could also put in new liquid if you prefer. If that doesn't work or you don't want to try the procedure then your only alternatives are to do a gookit rebuild or sell the lamp. As I said in an earlier comment, if your lava is old and breaking down then this procedure will not work. It needs to be replaced.
