Finally scored one of these. I had wanted one forever, but I have to admit, it's not as cool as I'd hoped it would be. For some reason, the red in the spinner doesn't show up. Modulo tells me this was made in 1973/1974.

Your screens look amazing. I can't wait to try this! My bulb is transparent. The color effect is pretty muted on mine.
cheers Erin for the photos, it looks like a printed design rather than the hand painted ones crestworth done, with the black it must block alot of glow, are you using a transparent glass bulb or a white coloured one? i use a white ( pearl ) type if i use a clear bulb the patterns will look like the image below and shows each painted section and brushmarks .
I agree loren, i hate to think how many shades ive made and found if you try and do a design say like umm diamond pattern or circles etc it dont work due to the pearl coloured bulb and the frosted globe, so just multi patterns / splodges or shirls give the best effect, ive tried black paint with colours but that failed lol its just try and see what works and expect to buy a lot of paint !
Awesome! I think those are soooooo cool, especially after seeing all the modding possibilities!
the aluminum fan i bought a replacement type of ebay which are used in "fake" looking electric fire heaters link below, i then trimmed it to size, and it spins better than the original, im not sure if yours spins on a steel needle ( point ) the type used in old windup gramophones aka u.s phonographs, ive replaced mine with a sapphire tipped end so it wont blunt so quick. anyway link below and i must get to bed, please takes some photos of the inside when you have time.

Thank you so much Johnny for the tips! I found your other pics on here that document the process. This is *exactly* what I'm looking to do. I'd like to replicate the aluminum "fan"(?)" at the top so I don't have to destroy the original one to make these replacement spinners. Can't be too hard to find some thin aluminum and cut it and put in the vents.
Your replacement spinners look awesome! I love them!
