I've given up on a website. I thought I could do it myself, but I can't. All I'm getting is frustrated.
I simply do not have the money to pay someone to make this website for me.
So all of this was for nothing.
And I'm a ****ing idiot.

The whole point is that the add-ons I use make your site more than a forum. Much More than just a "Forum." There's a tremendous add-on that allows you to use and implement full blown social networking; similar to Ning, or Facebook. Another allows you to place a "portal" on the front end of your site with a 'splash' page; these are options I haven't implemented on my site yet but am working on. If you're not into it, you don't have to be, just letting you know there are options. Otherwise hire a geek for 30 dollars an hour and they'll get it working in a few hours.
That sounds very cool, and I'd love to explore all that one day, but honestly all I really need right now is for someone to help me get my lamp builder working correctly, fix the "contact" tab, and add a shopping cart to send to paypal. If I could get those 3 things working, I'd be happy. The forum is something I haven't really even worked on very much. A lot of people have asked me to consider whether I really need to have one at all. I want one, though!
Oh, and it does have reputation options, and you can assign profile tags and special awards, users and earn special privileges, there's also a virtual money system that's very cool.
As far as your template goes, I'm afraid I'm not much help; I'd have to have access to take a look; and even then... I'm not an expert, I'm just good at tinkering. What I can do is give you options and sources for phpbb. It has a surprising amount of options. You can make alternate pages away from the discussion boards, you can even give it a 'facebook' social media option. There are literally hundred of options. If you're interested I'll post some links to phpbb's website that give some very cool options for customizing your board. It won't just be a forum board, you can make it MUCH more.
Thanks! :) That template started out as a free one from my web host. Turns out they only gave me control over changing a tiny amount of editing options unless I paid a per month fee...so I ripped it and moved it to my new web host. LOL! And I'm stuck at a certain point in the lamp builder design...the transparent gif's are not overlapping properly, and I don't know how to fix it. I've tried and tried.
And for some reason, the code that I entered for the contact form wasn't embedded correctly. It is entirely possible that the reason is because I didn't enter the code correctly. LOL! Again, all attempts to fix it ended in failure.
And no! I knew I liked PHPbb, but I honestly had not looked into the add-ons. Does it have a rep system with customizable rep meter icons?
Very nice Loren, glad you like the banner, I've been meaning to add several more but haven't had the time. I need to invest more time in my site and start promoting it. I like the 'moving' features on your site. What Template are you using? Did you have to buy it? If so do you have support for it? Where are you getting stuck? I see you're using PHPbb for your forum, nice choice, are you aware of all of the TREMENDOUS add-ons that are available for it?
Looks nice! And refreshing the page was, well...refreshing! :p I like the changing banner.
When you say "...but it's mine and I love it." That's all that matters!
And I feel similar ways about my website, though mine is still largely broken. I started out with a template, but I tweaked it a pretty good bit.
The only links that work are the forum and home links. I also need to finish that lamp builder! Sigh...
Loren,
What style of website are you shooting for? I know a bit about making sites, here is mine: www.iconicidea.com
It's still not what I want, and no one goes to it, but, it's mine and I love it. I made it using the PHPbb package, I can also makes sites with Joomla. I can now highly modify either package into nearly anything I want them to look like. If you want some tips or like the look of my site, I can show you a few options.
Thank you! I sent you a PM. :)
And yes...no pressure at all! If you can help with anything, then that's great! If you can't help with anything, I'm still so happy that you would look at it for me...
Lorin, if you want to PM me, I might be able to help you out temporarily, free of charge. :) Without seeing what you're working on, it's hard to know if I could help. No pressure, but I'd be happy to take a look at what you have and see if I can help fix things. So you're on Coffee Cup right now? I think I remember looking into that program once. The one part I would really struggle with is the "design your lamp" part and any sort of programming, but like I said, let me know if you want help and I'll take a look. :)
