Thanks for the welcome, I come across this site looking on how to fix a cloudy lamp, I purchased a mathmos jet with red wax from a car boot sale. I am in the process of changing the solution again, I failed the first time round buy adding too much washing liquid to the water and ended up with lots of little bloblets. any help on this would be great I am using Epsom salts for the mixture, is this ok or is there a better solution? also i might make a new wax mixture for it with flourescent green wax as it would go with the black lamp body :) any help there would be great also. cheers james
Thanks for the nice welcome! I have always had a latent interest in lava lamps, but a recent look into things to do for a science fair project for my 9 year old daughter found me considering making a lava lamp from scratch. We ended up doing something else this year, but will likely make a lamp when the science fair comes up again next year. I recently picked up a Chinese lamp from a junk shop and have it working well. I found another small one in a box of junk missing the metal decorative cap and have it working well. I have had good success in reusing the old wax mixture with new distilled water, salt, and soap. I have not yet tried to creat the "lava" from scratch, but have all the ingredients including the "perc". I will post some of my results when I have something to contribute.
Thanks for the warm welcome. I have only just starting collecting these lamps, my first was going to be a Lunar, bought on Ebay, but when I went to collect it, it was not in as good condition as I had been led to believe. I left that, and bought a Mathmos Faze 3 light, and then a violet and orange Jet. I have recently bought 2 Adukis and an Astro, but I woud still like a Lunar one day!
Hi Alpha,
Thank you for the warm welcome. About me: I thought lava lamps were cool when I was a little kid in the 60's. Then I forgot about them for many years...until recently. In the last couple of years I became interested in LEDs, especially the colour changing mood lights and Plasma lamps (I have the shrooms). All this interest in various cool lamps lead me back to the lava. Lately I noticed a lava lamp on ebay which was the size and colour I preferred (14.5 inches - purple/yellow). I've had it for 3 days now and while I love the firey orange glow, it has a sluggishness problem which is getting worse...which is how I ended up here. Hopefully the friendly folks at this site can help me out but I thought I'd do some reading before asking a lot of questions. Thanks again!
Thank you. i love the classics. someting about the cut outs i like. this is a great site. thanks for letting me join. i hope i can help or be helpped. Thanks again.
such a warm welcome to this site! its great!! so far people who ive talked to here seem to really like Canada! Canada rocks!! i love it here. I live in Victoria BC on Vancouver Island! Canada's secret paradise! Ive always loved Lava Lamps and finally decided to get one of my own! I recieved it yesterday but its cloudy! NOT impressed at all!! ive read so many forums and tips on it but im not too sure what to do about it, it may be permanent or it could clear up, Ive phoned the place and left emails and have not got anything in return yet, but I have not had it more than 24 hours yet so ill just keep reaserching and waiting to hear a reply
Alpha,
thanks for the warm welcome. I am a newbie to the lava lamp scene. I have long been interested in owning one of these lamps and have recently purchased one. Sadly, it - and its replacement does not work. I found this website searching for a solution. I plan to research this site for answers. I look forward to finding out more about these fascinating lamps (and hopefully getting on that works)
Warm regards,
Clive
Thanks for the kind and welcoming comment Jerome. I hope to update my profile soon, but unfortunately have got caught up in other things at the moment. I am a full time student with an almost full time job. Lately I've been rather tense from all of the overwhelming loads of work I deal with, and noticed how a lava lamp has a "relaxing" effect. Unfortunately, I am experiencing problems with the one that I bought. I bought a 52oz. Lava lamp from Spencer's Gift store, I have turned it on about four times now, each time about 6 hours in length.I believe it is just getting too hot, or not hot enough because the "lava" just forms a dome at the base of the lamp, and there is little to no other activity. I suppose I will exchange the lamp, and if the next one doesn't work, I may invest a little more into a more reliable lamp such as an Astro. Again, thanks for the warm welcome, I will try to update my profile soon.
Hi all,
I am new to the lava lamp scene and to be quite honest my interest was borne form an offhand comment from my wife.
You see, I am a musician (bassist, specifically) and I got into the habit of keeping a mascot of sorts on my amp whenever I played live. For the last couple of years it has been a Dancing Hula Girl as I slapped away in a Rockabilly band.
Recently I changed projects and am now playing acoustic Hot Tuna, so one late night (after much drinking and Wii bowling) a discussion ensued as to what I should place on my amp instead of my trusty Hula Girl. Of course, mushrooms, Tie Die Hippie bears and other psychedelia were thrown out for consideration. Suddenly, my wife blurted out "How about a small Lava Lamp."
Eureka, that was it!!!!!
I ordered a 10" accent lamp online (Lava-Lite) and of course it has been nothing but trouble since I have got it.
I found this community after doing a web search to see if I can fix this lamp.
In the meantime I am hooked on these things and am considering getting two Mathmos lamps shipped here for my living room.

I would really like to find an empty lava grande or Colossus setup to work with.
Thanks !
