There is a seal at the top. I specifically remember it because a member here was redoing one of these lamps and there was this big black ring at the bottom. The seal had fallen into the lamp.
I got mine from San Fransisco a few years ago. It was shipped up to me ( I live in Alberta, Canada) by UPS. The seller packed it extremely well, but I was very nervous non the less.
The liquid was a mess. I tried filtering it a few times, but it was hopeless. I decided to give it a wholesale liquid change. Distilled water, a few drops of dishsoap, some sea salt ,and a few drops of blue food coloring. The wax is original.
It takes a couple of hours to get up to speed, but then it can pretty much run all day.

The cap does not have a hole in it. I believe that rumour started a few years ago. The spun aluminum on the cap comes to a sharp point, and the aluminum at the point is a bit weak. It's likely that there was an Imperial out there that had an unwanted hole in the cap.

Cheers.
If anyone is interested in selling their Wave motion Light Please Let me Know.
I am now in the market for one of these.
Thanks

My Imperial was picked up in Orange County Calif. in the early 2000s.

Mine does have a hole at the very peak of the cap. Looks to be on purpose just like the empty globe that was for sale in 2018. That had a hole in the top. You could see liquid came out of it somehow and stained the cap.

I've only seen one Imperial in person, back around the late 90s in an antique shop in Seattle called Jet City, which closed years ago. It had been orange lava/yellow liquid, but honestly could have carried the title "The Dancing Diarrhea." It looked vile! It did have a small and very evenly-round hole at the tip of the cap. The shop owner believed it was supposed to look like the Space Needle and must have been made for the 1962 World's Fair; when I explained that lava lamps did not appear in the USA until licensed from England in '65, he said something to the effect of, "I'm not so sure about that, the Fair did have some very futuristic things!" I was told a man visiting from Japan bought it. It had been marked at $500.

Jonas,

When you came to visit my mini museum back in the 2000's. Didnt I have my Imperial at that visit?

Jeff

I think you did not have that yet, I would remember it. The one I described above, with the flowing orange spew inside, is the only Imperial I've seen in person. Some or other user here had a Glitterlite one!! The only thing rarer now is the white-finished one mentioned in a catalog.
