Suspensions, Mods, and Other Fun Stuff

You may have noticed a bit of, let's say, "heated discussion" happening on the Goo lately.  It happens from time to time on any popular forum-based site;  disagreements turn into fights and then it becomes personal.  It's not unusual and I'm not really here to blame anyone.

What we do need is a clear set of Community Guidelines, more transparency regarding account suspensions, and a more robust Moderator team.  Because 2 of the current Mods (Jerome and I) are not on the site as frequently as necessary, we'll be getting replaced by 2 new admins.  I'm going to remain available to be a tie-breaker in case of a split decision on the new Mod team.

We're going to create an ongoing thread here in this OG Network Talk section for suspensions to explain the reason and list the duration of the suspension.

If you have a Mod nomination that you would like to make, make it here in this thread.  I'll take ALL the nominations and create a poll.  The 2 new Mods will be selected by me from the top 5 results of the poll.  I wish I could make everyone a Mod, but that's just crazy talk. 

The Moderator terms for all 4 spots will be 1-year, and we will go through a similar process next year. This way everyone who wants to be a Mod, and is recognized by their peer group as worthy, will get a chance to try it out (and probably learn it ain't as easy as it looks)  :-)

Another point of consideration, Mark, is does all of the content of someone who becomes suspended have to permanently disappear? That seems like such a waste of good information

Thanks, Erin. I don't think I'm on here often enough to be a good Moderator, but I do like to gently poke discussions to try to keep them civil.

Yes, if someone does get banned, how do they contact the site to discuss the ban? Also, people being banned really need to be told why - exactly what they did, and which rule(s) were broken. I've been on plenty of forums for other topics where it's an ongoing problem that those who are banned aren't told why, though in a few cases I wonder whether the idea isn't to make sure they never come back, rather than trying to get them to reform.

I'll say it here, too: I think there should be a complaint board. Gripe about Lava's lack of quality control, gripe about the eBay seller who broke your globe by skimping on packing material, gripe about each other, whatever. Only rule being: keep things in the right threads, i.e. no whining about Lava quality in the "Bad eBay sellers" thread or vice-versa. Off said board, rule is, no complaint threads, and no sidetracking threads with griping - no interrupting a "What will Lava Lite come up with in 2011?" thread with "Resins, skins, and more worthless garbage like they always do. I have zero faith in them, so should you, and I'm going to flood your thread with my complaining!"

Now I have been unbanned, we need to get rid of the [edit] moderators and who else is sick of the current two on the site.

I would like to point out this was almost entirely due to the current moderators actions. This is another reason why there is so much anger directed at the mods.

Sadly the one chance we had to bend LavaWorlds ear was lost. I do not blame them for not coming back and the current issues once again just validate their decision. When nothing changes, everything stays the same.
