Help Needed with Crestworth Galaxy Perspex Base pleaseeee

congrats on your Galaxy! they are very lovely :)

BTW i assume you want to make the base for authenticity reasons, but you can still use the lamp without the base while you're waiting as it has a flat part on the very bottom so it won't roll away!

looking forward to seeing pics. if its the one I think it is, it has the longer fibres like mine. nice find. :)

thank you, yes im hoping to get the stand made for me by a friend that works in sheet metal, so ill probably have a copper or chrome base made up for it, just need the dimensions and shape, the old thread on here dont let me open the file! :(

I don't have one, so I can't help with dimensions, but I hope someone here who does will make you a template, so I'm bumping this thread.

 

The Perspex sheets (Plexiglas is the most common US equivalent, but I've always loved the Perspex name) fit together, two of them nesting in a way: each has a slot, one halfway up from the bottom, the other halfway down from the top, and they fit neatly together. Once you have a template and dimensions for both sheets, you can take these to a shop that makes signs, which will probably have the equipment for precision cutting. Most neon sign shops in the US use Plexiglas sheets as backs for neon window signs.

 

A product that in the US is called Lexan is even stronger than Plexi/Perspex, and you might consider it, too. Case in point: When I worked at a neon sign shop, we used Plexiglass hollow tubes as supports for signs, to keep them hanging without bumping into the window glass. If you were to smack a length of this tube on a hard surface, it would crack; one more smack and it'd shatter. One of my friends builds things out of Lexan sheet and tube, and to demonstrate its strength he let another friend (who was very angry about something) vent his stress by pounding the concrete driveway with a Lexan tube, about the same thickness and diameter we used at the sign shop. After five minutes of rough hammering on the concrete (he was VERY angry) he'd managed to put a number of little dents into the tube's surface, and had powdered some concrete!

Thanks Jonas, I hope I can get a template! as I want to make a clear one and a copper one also, I have a friend that works with lazer cutting that could do it for me. thanks dude :D p.s will post pics of the galaxy soon as i get home. cheers

Just to clarify as my drawing is soooo bad.

 

Width across top of both pieces is 14.5 cms

Depth at deepest point of curves which lamp sits in is 1.8 cms

 

Length of top to thinnest point of base is 7cms (width across middle 5 cms)

Length from middle to widest point of base is 14 cms

 

Base is 5.5cms on each side the raises up 4 mm's for 25 cms on both pieces before dropping down for 5.5cms again

 

To put them together one groove is 6.6 cms lonf and 5 mm wide -- the other is 7.1 cms long and 5 mm wide. i cant rember which wa y around they go. it's probably logical but I will check for you. Hope this helps!

Sorry about the late reply, Thank you very much Spencer! I am having one made out of chrome this week, I also dismantled my galaxy today and gave it a well needed service, which included lots of oil on the motors a bit of plastic polish on the base, and a hair dryer to the fibres to get rid of bits lol originally the fan made a noise like a car starting so i disconnected it to stop it. so i finally bought some all round oil and it worked a treat! now its as quiet as a baby :) I will post some pics of it once my friend finishes the base. Thanks again
