Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Let's say I found a clear glitter Jet. Unfortunately I haven't yet, but let's just say I did.

Now let's say I put 1 of these things under the globe:

That is a pack of light filters, for use with very hot lighting units. Would it really make that much of a difference? I can imagine the effect being both meh, and drop dead stunning. Has anybody tried this? I figure this would also be easier and cheaper than trying to buy a full compliment of bulbs in not only the right size and wattage, but color as well. I KNOW it would be simpler than coloring the oil.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I bought some cheap ones off ebay and they melted. I am not sure if they will all melt, but mine did.

I have done it, it does work though with daily use the filter fades out in about 6 months. Only the stronger colors work, so that entire top row of colors there would be useless.  If you have a specific color in mind it would be far more economical to but a whole sheet of the gel color you would like and cut out pieces as needed

@Autumn - That pack is 25 bucks. I have absolutely no idea if that is cheap or not. I would hope "not" lol! But I'm honestly not sure! I know those things freak me out. They are almost flame retardant, but get one drop of water on them, and they dissolve into a puddle! That shouldn't happen ever. :-/

@Gwen - That is a good idea. I like the variety, but you are right. I would wear out certain colors.

Thanks for the help, you both!

to prevent them from melting, they cannot be put against a bulb at all and should not be within 6" of a halogen bulb, I use them daily in my work and we use 200W bulbs and a gel will last around 4-5 months

I was planning on putting mine right against the bottom of the bottle. As long as I don't use halogen, that would put the gel out of harms way, I think. I'm the kind of person that comes home and turns everything on. :p It stays that way until I go to bed, generally speaking. I'm sure I would wreck those things in no time. Still, I like being able to change the color on a whim.

If the effect is good and strong, I can replace the gels when I need to. It would be worth it to me to not have to buy colored bulbs or change the fluid all the time.

But I should probably just get a jet first and stop day dreaming. :p

Wow!!

It's funny. In just a few days, I've been able to get so much closer to what I'm looking for, with the help of you guys. After very little time here, I found the jets, which then were the end-all. But after a bit of time, there are 2 things I don't like about the jet's design. First, I don't really like that lip on the base. To me it interrupts the flow of the whole, and makes the whole thing look top-heavy by making the base slightly narrower than the rest of the lamp. Second, I don't like how tall the lid is (or the base. for that matter). I also don't like how the lid looks like an afterthought...like it was just stuck on at the last minute.

Now look at those living jewels and fantasias!!

They look MUCH better to me, in all regards! Look how well the lid and base seem to be integrated with the globe...smooth, uninterrupted lines! So sleek! The base looks more sturdy to me, also. Some people might say the design is too simple, but I say the base and lid are there simply to enhance what's in the globe, not distract from it. I still want to see a slightly taller viewing window (same overall lamp height, but shorter lid and base), but that is such a small aesthetic thing. I doubt I'll be able to find the EXACT size ratios, in the exact right proportions that I'm looking for without a lot of custom modding.

The US fantasias are very nice! However, look at the lid. Jetsville. :-/

Thank you so much for your help!

Sorry to go off-topic a bit in my own thread! LOL! But yes, those types of lamps are exactly the type that I'm wanting to use those gels in. :) I'm so glad that I'll be able to, as long as I get more expensive gels!

Nice! And yes I agree...they look great as they are, but they sure would look beautiful with a glitter bottle.

Sorry to double-post, but I recently came across these colored bulbs, or something similar, at Home Depot. I think, in light of what I've learned about the temporary nature of gels, and how expensive they are for the high quality ones (not to mention the time and cost of shipping), I've decided to go with colored bulbs for my clear glitter lamps in the future, and definitely plan to experiment with colored bulbs in other things, as well. I have never ordered from these people, but they have a fairly good selection.

RED              25watt       40watt

ORANGE       25watt       40watt

YELLOW       25watt       40watt

GREEN         25watt       40watt

BLUE            25watt       40watt

they also have 60watt and higher in some of those colors.

Only problem is size A19 is too big for the vast majority of lamps.

...Isn't that what's in a 32oz lava lite? The 25watt bulbs from my 20oz lamps look just like that, and the 40watt bulbs in all 4 of my 32oz lamps look just like those also.

What do the vast majority use?

The only other type that I've seen is narrower slightly...that's what's in my oozzy glo tower. I don't own anything by mathmos yet.

The majority of my 32 and 52oz use A15 bulbs with the exception of my two Starship and Wizard lamps whom take a S11.  All of my 20oz bases take an R12 mini spot.  I also have in my database what bulbs my off brands take but that is kind of scattered and all must be bought online.

Sigh...I was so happy that I found those. LOL! Those are not what I thought they were at all.

Sorry to be such a noob.

...Again.
