Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I came into possession of a Mille Luci glitter lamp. I didn't care for it as much as I'd hoped so I sold it on eBay (don't judge me!). I did manage to capture the patent no. before packing up: 4,072,855.

You can read about it here: http://www.google.com/patents?id=TyI1AAAAEBAJ&printsec=abstract...

What's interesting to me is that the ratio, along with the chemicals used are given. I've never known what the ratio of one chemical to another would be. The two chemicals used in these lamps are trichloro(e)thylene and dichloroethylene. Specifically:

Are these chemicals still available? I know they are pretty nasty chemicals.

I remember posting something similar while looking up the same patent info on mine:

Well awesome! Great minds think alike. You ever tried to track down any of the chemicals used in this lamp?

No, haven't ever looked for the chemicals. Pretty hazardous stuff though.

After some googling it looks like it is still possible to purchase these chemicals, but they are hazardous, expensive, and hard to find a source. That is probably why they stopped making them.

Thies things sound really nasty - its surprising that they filled lamps with them and marketed them as consumer products but i guess that little was known about it at that point.

It was also even more shocking that it was used in hospitals!!!!

I think that if your crazy and / or prepared enough to fill a lamp with this then it could be a option - i mean its going to flow super fast with these kind of solvents in there.

What the sensible option would be to do is to find there new safer alternatives and use them to make your lamp out of.

LOL...you say it as it is Tim...love on ya :)

Again, nice sleuthing!! :D

And I really hope I don't have to use anything like that in my lamps... (@_@)

You won't have to Lorin. They don't use that stuff anymore.
