I would return it or ask for an exchange. These lamps are supposed to provide years of enjoyment, not weeks. Sorry to hear about it Gandhiman.

That's what steered me away from the Smart Astro, electronics running everything. That's why I'm going to buy an Astrobaby and a Telstar. No LED's or heat plates, just a good 'ole bulb. Maybe in the future the Smart Astro might have the bugs work out.

Got mine in november, direct from Mathmos, lava was ugly, bubbly and grainy, looks better over time though, short runtime is a minus, it overheats quickly, about 5 hours running, the lava disintegrates into hundreds of small blobs. The led´s have f...ed up, so mine won´t color-change anymore, only shows a greenish. Really weird is that occasionally, very seldomly, it actuallly does colorchange, although in a wobbly kind of way. Still working, although in a disabled kind of way. All in all I´m disappointed with this lamp, paid 125 euro for it. Should return it really...

That makes me very nervous about getting one. Is yours a first or second generation?

My Smart Astro(s) occasionally gets stuck on 'Dim' even thought this isn't a legit setting!  I just switch it off at the mains, problem solved.

Gandhiman. Return that sucker immediately and get a good one in return. Mathmos are pretty good like that!

Yes I know, will contact Mathmos soon, I´m sure they´ll be helpful. Need to get this annoying thing cleared...

there's 3 colourways but only 2 kinds of wax colour, i'm confused.

I contacted Mathmos about my defective Smart Astro, I don´t have to return anything, they´ll send me a new base when it becomes available, which unfortunately is in march...

They put different color LEDs that reacts with the goo differently, some are actually fluorescent.  So sometimes is the liquid.

Ok so just bought a Smart Astro (the one on the right). is this "polished" aluminium? Didn't they used to be shiny like chrome, as shown on the box and the Mathmos website?

Hi Kaia, Yes, the first run of Smart Astro's had a much more polished finish than the second run which are available now. They must have decided to make production a bit cheaper by not polishing them as much....

but didnt some members also purchase some of the new run and received polished bases? if not I'd say they only used to polished bases on the limited first run. have you given them a call yet?
