Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Found oozinggoo.com when I was looking for ways to repair the Grande I picked up at CostCo a few years ago.  It's one of the Chinese made ones that has gone extremely cloudy and ceased to flow (going to try replacing the fluid one of these weekends).

It was here that I found out about really big Lava lamps.  I was bowled over by videos of the  Colossus lamps and really want to see if I could get one, I couldn't find them available anywhere so I wrote LavaLite.  I wanted to let this group know what I got this from Lava Lite today:

We have a special promo on the Colossus for serious buyers.   This will be the last time the Colossus will be seen.

Please see attached promo sheet with pricing included.

If you are interested please contact on my direct line at 630-496-6663.

Best regards,

Sadly these prices are outside of my discretionary funds, even though they include shipping.  I post it in hopes that someone here may be interested.

Smirkle (or others) - anyone know the width of the bottom of the base?  I did end up picking up a square slab of black granite tile and I am hoping I got the right size (not too big and not too small).

I got 4 marble tiles and am guessing 24" should be enough

I can't work with guesses Gwen - I need actual numbers.  I would be concerned with 4 separate tiles as I would think the lamp, centered, would cause the outer corners of each tile to bow upwards.

I am hoping my single tile, thick and heavy granite, will do it.  I have 18" X 18".

I have been asking since day 1 including Susan how big the base is and have yet to get an answer from anyone

I think the info in this thread tells me what I need.  Looks like my tile will be perfect (yay).  http://oozinggoo.ning.com/forum/topics/planing-to-get-a-colossus?co...

"The globe portion comes in a box that is 17x17x37 inches. the base comes in a box 17x17x27 inches."

Thus if the base box is 17" x 17", the base should be less (maybe 16" x 16" at the most) so 18" x 18" should be perfect with the tile.

I'm going to have to stick with my tiles, it's the largest I could find in town without a special order during the winter

Are these tiles intended to support the lamp on a carpeted surface?

Sorry if I missed that in the discussion.

Wow this all looks very interesting. I want a colossus so bad.

more for carpet protection since I am a renter

For me, yes Loren.  My family room is carpeted and as this is the room we spend the most time in, the lamp must go there on principle.

Although the store is an absolute dump, I knew they would be good for this purpose.  HOBO.  The tile I got is solid black granite, 18" x 18" x .5" and weighs 22 pounds.  Should provide the perfect stable base on carpeting.  Should match the black granite base perfectly as well.

Mine's going on a hardwood floor, and it looks like my spot I picked out will be perfect. I wasn't sure how big the base was, but I think I've got the furniture moved enough to accomodate this monster!

Also, does anyone know if the cord has the standard two prong plug, or if it has the three pronged plug with ground? Trying to figure out if I need a heavy duty extension cord or not.

Our tax checks should be deposited tomorrow. As soon as that happens, I'm calling in my order. I don't think I will be able to order a black granate base and cap, but maybe the white marble? I know I don't want the wood. I'm also thinking about a clear/red, but I think both of those will be gone by the time I can call tomorrow morning, if they aren't gone already.
