Colossus Lamps available!

Found oozinggoo.com when I was looking for ways to repair the Grande I picked up at CostCo a few years ago.  It's one of the Chinese made ones that has gone extremely cloudy and ceased to flow (going to try replacing the fluid one of these weekends). 

It was here that I found out about really big Lava lamps.  I was bowled over by videos of the  Colossus lamps and really want to see if I could get one, I couldn't find them available anywhere so I wrote LavaLite.  I wanted to let this group know what I got this from Lava Lite today:

question, can you guys tell me what specific bulb to get if mine goes. I want to order a few for back ups. I plan to get a 300w timer for the lamp to help break it in, and run it for 6 to 8 hours a day. I get mine on wednesday, I know I also plan not to run it till friday, to give it plenty of time to settle

I ordered bulbrite 250w heat bulb. 130 volts instead of the 120 volt that came with it. Fluctuations in electric can cause bulbs to blow.

130 volt helps protect against this.

fluctuations? do you mean like surge?  ok I will order the 130v  250w but what is the actual model number of the bulb? is it the BR40?

Yes, we ran ours calmly for almost a week, but we were adjusting it daily depending on how it was flowing, if it got too hot we turned it down a bit if it was too cool we turned it up a bit.  Being that my Apt is generally between 80 and 85 we were not usually running at 70% we were closer to 55-60% or it got too hot

Don - it is a BR40.  Here is the description on Amazon - Bulbrite 250BR40H 250W Heat Lamp BR40 Reflector Light, Clear.  I also bought a couple of the red Bulbrite bulbs, too.  Just for fun...

Seems there is a price to pay for the purple/yellow.  Your experience sounds similar.  I have heated it up very quickly and very slowly. Very slowly seems to work better -- i.e.: the flow lasts longer before it goes into the "abyss".

I agree - let's let one of us talk to Susan.  She is a nice lady.  :>)

Seeing similar behavior to my purple yellow too. It seems to go from perfect flow to too hot in an instant. I have seen bare coil too. I am not sure what to make if it just yet. I am playing with it a bit to see what works. I definitely have not fully cranked up the lamp and won't as I don't see that helping at all.

Stephanie, please post what Susan says tomorrow and maybe mention to her that others are seeing the same issue. I cannot see that it would make sense for all of us to bombard her simultaneously. She is a nice lady and I know she is quite busy here lately.

no the heat is not by choice by any means, the building is old and we get the heat first so that when the unit with the thermostat gets up to 70 we have reached 90 sometimes.  We never have all of our radiators on and usually at least on window is open year round

No worries, it's just warming the water instead of the goo.  Any goo that hits the coil liquifies, decreases in density and rises until it hits cool water then it solidifies and decreases in density.  However, the goo often solidifies in an irregular shape that prevents it from contacting the coil again.  The solution for me has been to wait until all the water is heated then the goo is in the liquid phase away from the coil.

Sometimes I turn the lamp off or low so the goo will flow back onto the coil, then I have a little show when I turn up the heat...it's a great way to build a tree one branch at a time.
