Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hello everybody!

I've got a Century 100-1982, that works well, but as you can see, needs fluid. Was tipped over years ago and I never quite figured out how to add more.

From what I can figure out from the info on the site, is that the best thing to do would be to remove all the liquid, clean the container and refill with new liquid. And I'm thinking I've figured out that I don't know where to start with how to refill it or what to refill it with.

Should I empty and refill (looking for advice and easy how to do it, plse) or can I dodge the bullet and top off with something?

The liquid really smells like kerosene.

Thanks for your help!

Elaine

Hi, Elaine.  The safest thing to do is find a lamp from the late 70s, early 80s and top it off with that liquid.  I'd look for a vintage century on Ebay that had issues with the wax or the base, so it would be cheaper to purchase.  Use the liquid from it.

Topping it off with newer Lava Lite liquid or anything else is not an easy task but can be done.  There is information in FAQ section of the Lava Library that may help.

Not the FAQ section, but close.  :>)

Also this: http://oozinggoo.ning.com/forum/topics/lava-soup-replacing-the-liquid if you plan to replace the liquid. Many of us have had luck with salt and some kind of surfactant.

I was going to suggest the same as Kirk and for the same reasons.  The wax/water formula changed in the late eighties or early nineties so would not be a straight forward addition.

I like the way ya'll think!!!

Makes so much sense...!

I'll get to searching on ebay and let you all know how it progresses. Should be pretty simple!

And thank you internet for a site that contains extraordinary info on lavalamps!

You all are my kinda people!

geeze...just found this!   http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mint-New-in-Box-Old-Stock-Vintage-Lava-Lite...

Sorry, have to ask another question regarding finding a suitable replacement lamp for the fluid.

Do I have to have another 'Century' lamp or are the lamps identified as LAVALamp the same thing?

Would a lamp with the soda pop top be a suitable replacement?

None of the soda pop tops would be suitable.  They are all post 1990 and will have a different fluid formula.

There is another lamp during that same time period that would work - an Aristocrat (link). They used the same bottle.

Thanks very much for the info!

this method is tried and true (epsom salt, surfactant, and distilled water).  i recommend it over finding a donor lamp for replacing the liquid.  you can use dawn dishwashing soap or order some surfactant from magma tower on eBay.  either will work, but i tend to lean toward the MT surfactant as i've had less issues with it.  good luck!

You can also use/try Miracle Bubbles as a surfactant - that stuff can be found everywhere. It's kids' bubbles.

So many different ways to do this....I'm still trying to find the path of least resistance...:)

You all are great!

I appreciate your ideas and expertise!
