Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Half of my collection was stored awsy in my Storage unit, the unit was not temperature controlled. It is my understanding that the Globes will no longer work? I did try out two globes, no activity after melt down. At this point, a transplant would have to be performed, a few have removable tops, the others are Bottle Capped. My question here is, can I purchase a Goo Kit and just replace the Liquid in the globes? It would seem that only the liquid would be permanently damaged from the sub freezing temperatures, and not the wax? Any advice provided, is greatly appreciated!

I would suggest trying the globes a few times each to make sure.  But first give the globes a couple of days to come up to room temperature before placing on heat.

With a Goo Kit, you provided the fluid (distilled water), they provide everything else.

I agree with Keith, give them a chance to get back to normal temperature and then try them out a few times before discarding them; I was told (here in the UK) that Mathmos globes could be stored in an unheated garage in winter. Never tried it, though...

Thank you very much. These have been in my collection for over ten years, never over worked or abused. They are older Simplex models, none of them are made in China. I will follow your tips.
The wax separation may be able to be undone -
EMPTY & REFILL empty water (retain in clean jar) if you remove the 'matter' and wax and oil from the bottle - combine in stainless bowl, double boiler method (I strongly recommend a convection style cooking surface as there s no heat source to directly overheat or damage coil or wax.
REDO empty water (retain in jar) place bottle with what is left of the goo in double boiler method (see above)

Heat wax to ~ 320-degrees F (do not cause lava to bubble, it is boiling - this is a fail) for about 20-30 min - swirling, mixing.

KEY:
Remove and cool normally - approx 20-min to cool to a semi-hard state - as it cools, swirl the mix together gently.
As these cool, they will collect together. You will actually see the different constituents of the wax struggling to be separate.

Let me know how it goes.
Keith is 100% on-target
