Probabley would work if you put it on and then tapped it with a rubber mallet to secure it.
Why are you thinking of using corks / stoppers insted of the oringal or replacement cap for the globe?

I really think if you put it on when the lamp is at it's hottest, run it for a few more hours and then let it cool, it will work. I have the rubber stopper only in my Grande right now and it would indeed pop off until I put it on when it's at its hottest.

It will pop off. I know this from first hand experience.
I was thinking of making a lava lamp out of a erlenmeyer flask and I can't see any other way to seal it other then resorting to a rubber stopper.
