I would refill it with mathmos bottles

That would be a mishion - it would probably work but the cost would be huge, you would be better off taking it to Mathmos and saying 'fill me up' lol

I don't think goo kit, Mathmos formular or simmler is nessary - as long as the wax is in good shape then refill it with DI water and use picking salts or epson salts to aggust the flow of it.

When the Imperial was bult I think they knew what they were doing and probably made it mostly out of water to cut down on costs and maintaince etc so it should be fine with just water.

However I am not saying that you don't know what you are talking about its just a bit impractical if the wax is ok.

If I were in the same situation as you MJM then I would empty the water from it, replace it with DI water and use salts to aggust the flow. I wouldent be botherd about the cloure of it, as long as its reletivie clear and flows then thats all that matters - you have a Imperal and there arnt many who can say that!!!!

All I can say is "please don't dump the original wax". The original wax in an Imperial is unlike anything ever made. It snakes beautifully.

All you have to do is dump the liquid, replace it with distilled water, add food dye, and balance with sea salt. If that doesn't work, then you might do a refill.

If you decide to do a refill, save the old wax in a jar, just in case you want to restore it to its original colors later on.

As always, this is just my own opinion.

By the way, did anything ever come of the vague rumblings about "proper" liquid dyes becoming part of the GooKit arsenal?  I'm toying with the idea of purple/white ....

Lamphead refilled his with water. You might want to ask him what he had to do. He did make a post about it though.

I would suggest trying the distilled water first. The orange-red wax is sort of translucent. It absorbs the light and reflects it. Very bright. The light flows through it and it lights up the room.

It's not clear translucent like some of the china lamps. It's unlike other lava lamps. Maybe like the really old red consorts.

I would do whatever is possible to keep that original wax.

Oh, I hardly ever do anything that can't be undone without giving it a great deal of consideration.  Of course, that also means I hardly ever get anything done ... but I hardly ever have forehead-smacking regrets.

The purple-white GooKit idea is just that:  an idea.  Anything else would be wildly premature; I haven't even laid eyes on this beast yet.  I expect it will be months before I've properly assessed its current state, and probably further months before I have any sort of plan in mind.  (But I have ordered a bunch of half-gallon Mason jars, which I expect will come in handy for whatever's required, and for a bunch of other Goo-ey projects as well.) Maybe I'll make a purple/white GooKit grande instead.  That would be nice.  Who knows?

While I don't doubt that folks have found the GooKit unsatisfying in larger globes, I do find that a wee bit surprising; aren't large/very large/massive/gigantic/enormous globes exactly what the GooKit folks specialize in, as their primary business?  Seems odd, that.  But then, perhaps the GooKit blend differs from their in-house blend ...

And rest assured that I will of course be digesting all available Imperial-related information before doing a damned thing; my voluminous and sincere thanks to all who've provided such, and thanks in advance for any future guidance/advice.

Got Filter?

That would be the first thing I tried. ;-)

Katadyn Vario, which I prefer to the MSR MicroWorks EX because the activated carbon is removable.

Note to self:  implement forearm-curls regimen in preparation.

As FogRider said, do not dump the original wax. Imperials are very repairable and can be refilled with plain water. The top cap will be VERY hard to get off because it is siliconed on. I put mine in the bathtub and ran the shower over it with the hottest water then dumped a big pot of boiling water over it. Be very careful when you are trying to get the cap off, make sure you have it on a stable surface so the bottom wont slide out. I also used a feeler gauge to break some of the silicone loose.

I refilled mine with just RO water and ran it to see how it flowed...perfect. I will have to post a better video of it running as it is truly amazing. Congrats on the win and welcome to the Imperial club !!

See how bright the wax is!
