Crestworth, what are they made of?

Hi,

when I look at my old Crestworth lamps, the finish of them is definitively "chrome", but magnets don't stick on them, so it's not steel.

It could be stainless steel, but I'm inclined to think it's aluminium.

Problem: I thought the proceed to chrome aluminium wasn't discovered yet in the 70'.

So is it chromed aluminium, or something else?

Polished aluminum would be my guess. If I remember right Dale from Lava Lite told me the lava lite lamps are and always have been aluminum.

Polished Aluminium doesn't have the same shine.

This is definitively chrome.

Okay so you don't think it is aluminum and a magnet doesn't stick to it. You are running out of possibilities. Aluminum can actually polish up very nicely. Do a google search for "polished aluminum".

No, I think it is chromed aluminium.

Polished aluminium doesn't look the same. (Trust me, I'm in the hot rod scene, so I know the difference between polished aluminium and chrome.)

The problem is I think chromed aluminium doesn't exist from a long time, but maybe I'm wrong.

far as i know the metal aluminium was anodised ( dipped ) in chemical baths, giving the copper or silver finish

Thanks Johnny, I didn't think about anodisation, that's why we can see a thin film on it like if it was chromed.

Bare polished aluminium doesn't have this effect, and of course it tarnish with time.
