Hi all, Christmas disappointment. My wife bought me an Astro matt black from Mathmos with the clear black bottle for Christmas. The cap has two scratches on it, the three pin plug plastic cover was not on but lying loose in the box ,but worst of all the bottle cap is loose so some of the fluid had leaked. I will be sending an email to Mathmos in the coming days. I have not run it yet but was wondering if anybody else has one of these because the fluid is clear at the moment but have read on their Facebook that the colour of the wax can bleeding into the liquid and turn it purple.

Thats just shoddy it really is, I would send a email and also print out the email and send it to Mathmos as a letter to get your point across and if they don't offer you a refund then ask for one as that's no good at all.
Its disappointing to hear that the wax colour can bleed - I haven't heard about it before with there clear / blacks (to be honest it hasn't been a problem with lamps) maybe they are changing the formula and this has happened.
Sorry to hear that Bill, I know how you feel, my partner ordered me a new blue/red Astro bottle direct from Mathmos for my birthday back in August and I was very dissapointed with it. The Mathmos team were very helpful when I contacted them and after asking me to give it a week or so to settle they sent me a replacement, but I could see no improvement in either. Its really put me off buying from them for a while at least.
That's disappointing. I really wanted one of those, too, but getting a return/exchange from the US would be so hard that I'm not willing to chance it. What's happening to Mathmos?
Yep sounds about right for Mathmos quality control AGAIN !!!! it's such a shame they really have gone downhill ( in my opinion )
It's sad to hear that they are having problems. Hopefully they can regain quality control before they lose credibility.
Things are slipping down at Poole I think. This is a real shame. They must keep their QC tight.
I was very tempted to purchase one of these Matt-Black Astros but now I'm having second thoughts!
I have also found Mathmos to be really bad at customer care too.
I purchased a smart lava lamp earlier in the year, the bottle never stood straight in the base, and the cap didn't fit right.
I sent it back for a replacement, plus fancied the othe colour combination so included a cheque for a second lamp.
I waited and waited, for around 6 weeks, nothing, emailed them and they had obviously forgotten to see if my cheque had cleared for the second lamp, so sent none back not even the replacement one.
I told them not to bother to send the lamps, just send me a refund, as ever time I looked at the lamps it would be a reminder of poor service.
They have lost it.
I bought the black Astro and yes the liquid has been tainted with the wax colour giving it a muddy purple look. Also the base will not hold any other bottles strangely!
It's disappointing to hear these stories about the lamps and Mathmos's QC slipping, on the other hand I purchased both models of the black astro, clear/black and clear/orange as xmas presents for the other half and they were perfect, not a mark or defect on them.
I also received a black astro with clear/black bottle and a smart astro and theyre both perfect also, the smart astro is a much better design from their first release that for sure !
It's almost the luck of the draw with the QC of the lamps but it shouldn't have to be seen as were paying a premium price for a premium product !
Is the black actually black? I just received a new telstar, and the black in my case is maroon/deep wine and most definitely not black.
I'm about to e-mail them with my complaint, but was wondering if that is just their new definition of black.
On the other hand, my other two new telstars (clear/turq, purp/red) are both very nice with no problems that I see as of yet.
