Hello,My blue/green LavaLite Aristocrat needed a liquid change, as it was cloudy and created bubbles in the wax. So far I'm ready to throw it out the window. I've tried 3 different times, all have…Continue

Peter Panussi replied to Ben's discussion Vintage lamp keeps re-clouding
"I have only tried to restore 8-10 cloudy lamps until now, mostly Mathmos Astros and Astrobabies. Always by pouring away the old liquid, carefully washing out the globe with distilled water, putting in new distilled water, heating up until wax melts,…"

"This has generally been my experience too if trying to replace liquid that was previously cloudy, with the original wax. I always assumed that traces of the old fluid may remain in the wax?   I believe other forum members have had lots of…"

Vintage lamp keeps re-clouding

Hello,I have an old Lava-Simplex LavaLite lamp that has been giving me problems since day one. The master fluid was cloudy when I got it and the wax had tons of tiny bubbles. I did the basic Epsom Salt and Dawn liquid replacement, and it worked beautifully...for about two weeks. I noticed the liquid had gotten cloudy again even though I hadn't done anything to the lamp other than run it almost every day for the recommended 8 hours. So I replaced the liquid again, and a few weeks later the lamp…See More

Verax replied to Ben's discussion Green LavaLite lamp, wax doesn't stick to coil or move at all.
"I've had a lot (5-10) rejected coils after kitting.  From my limited experience, I found that just cycling the lamp (leaving it on for 6-8 hours, then off for 8+ hours, repeat) usually fixes the problem.  Sometimes it take up to 10 or…"

Sentrex replied to Ben's discussion Green LavaLite lamp, wax doesn't stick to coil or move at all.
"Hi Carol - just to be clear - did you wrap the original coil with the mesh? I have tried making new coils, cleaned, heated, treated etc and still have wax sticking to only 2/3 of the coil. If I could get past these damn coil issues my life would be…"

"In my (admittedly limited) experience, distilled water and a bit of soap only works with the 1960s lava."

"Just thought I'd give a quick update- I tried again about a week ago with tap water and aquarium salt, using glycerin as my surfactant. I poured the water in about 3/4 of the way up, and added salt solution to fill the rest of the space. I…"

"I'll post a picture below. Currently I've been using the original liquid and the flow has gotten a bit worse. It columns more now, and only flows properly for about an hour before going into "complete column mode". Do you use any…"

Sentrex replied to Ben's discussion Replacing Liquid: Am I Doing Something Wrong?
"I use glycerin on mine and the key is to add it while the lamp is HOT. I don't pre mix with the h2O, just leave 3-4 inches at the top and level off with h2O when it looks right. Don't try to do too much in one night IMO. Cycling them is…"

Ben replied to Ben's discussion Replacing Liquid: Am I Doing Something Wrong?
"The original fluid is light blue and the wax is green. I heard that the blue/green combo is very prone to getting bubbles in the wax."

Something Interesting About Me:
Hello, I'm Ben. I am a young musician, vintage fan collector, fire alarm collector, and vintage smoke alarm collector. Lava lamps aren't really something I necessarily collect, but do think they are beautiful and help relieve stress. I got my first lava lamp in around 2004, and I loved it. I love going out to antique shops and thrift stores to see what I can find.
