Watched that one end. Very cool lamp. I'm so hesitant to buy anything with low fluid. Also, I'd be bummed out to get one that stalled after running for only a short time.
Watched it too!
One thing bothered me, though. The winner won at the very last second, like if he/she used this illegal program that always enters the highest bid no matter what... I've lost many bids this way and, so far, ebay can't do nothing about it. If it was won the ''legal way'', congrats!!
It's not illegal Isabelle. The programs are called sniping programs. They will bid on your behalf up to the highest amount. However, sniping program or not, many (most) people bid during the last 10 seconds. It's all fair game; wait until the last 5-6 seconds, put in your high bid and see what happens!
I did not know they were legal. One thing is for sure, ebay doesn't think so. They had so many complaints that they are investigating and trying to figure out how to stop this.
Thanks for the heads-up, Erin!
Take care. :-)
Its really impossible to tell if a sniping tool was used or not. The manner in which I tend to bid probably makes it appear as if I use one, but I don't. The winner of this auction most likely didn't enter $138.74 and get lucky enough to win the auction. They could have bid $150, $200, $250... whatever they were willing to spend. You see $138.74 because that is all they need to pay to beat the next highest bidder. In my example, I put in a bid of like $260 on Spooktacular with 5 seconds left when it was sitting at like $78. I took it at $125'ish, but I had all other last second bidders beat all the way up to and including $260. I was destined to "just win" Spooktacular based on my bid and the fact Chow had one already - he was still bidder #2 though lol.
I don't know how sniping tools work and how you control them, but I would personally be concerned with a shill bidder jacking the price up.

Sniping programs illegal? Is there some rule posted about this? I've used one for years because sometimes I just forget.
Now if eBay reset the way the auction ends, by extending it as new bids come in (like Yahoo used to). Then it surely would change the playing field.
I used a sniping program because often, I cannot be sitting right in front of the auction when it ends. I also don't like to enter my high bid early, because many will just sit there and bid it up to that amount just to see how far the high bid is.
So, if there's an item I really want, I use Auction Sniper, put in my high amount and set it for X seconds before the auction ends. I don't always win though - oftentimes I am outbid by someone at the last second who was willing to pay more than I was. And that's fair.
Hey Rob!
That's was I was told by an ebay representative, a few months ago. He sait they had many complaints.
Looks like they are ''building a case''.
I'm sure we will know pretty soon... ;-)

As long as there is eBay...there will be sniping. No questions. You can read eBay's own FAQ guides, nothing illegal about it. If you can't be em', join em. ;p
There is definitely a lot of sniping that happens on Ebay. But I'd rather be sniped on Ebay, than to be sniped by some psycho off of Craigslist.
