Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

This is my neon yellow lamp I've had for a few months. The flow was very close to pre-China flow until now. Lately it's been acting lazy and spitting out small watery bubbles like this. It's exactly what my purple/yellow Colossus is doing! Any ideas?

can running a frosted 60w in a neon actually damage anything if you do it without a dimmer? I ran a frosted 60 and a dimmer on a 52oz midnight aristocrat i have that has the "lava column" problem as i was told that upping the bulb would give it more heat and break up the column for better flow but all it did was make the column pulsate faster and make me worried that im going to burn out the wax faster.

My neons burnt up on a 40 watt. U can run that aristocrat on a 40 watt with a dimmer so the column won't make it to the top
40W would be a smart move to make

It didn't work.  :(

However I remembered I have two brand new coils from replacement bottles ordered last year that had the 'first batch' awful (new style bottle) glass, so I used the contents to refill a pair of Crestworths that were spent.

I'm waiting for the 'dust' to settle before running them.

I have two globes that started to do this, I've warmed them up and hooked the coils out and dropped them in pan of boiling water and washing up liquid for a few minutes. The coils are back in the globes. I'm leaving them to cool down till the hundreds of wax particles caused when I foolishly shook the coils in the liquid to remove the wax still in them has settled.

Ben,

Lava lamp did make a thermostatically controlled lamp in general speaking.  All the icon series had dimmers inline on them to control heat/light output.  Something to think about.

Think a frosted bulb will run cooler, so to speak, than a clear bulb.  The tornadic flow you speak of does happen throughout different lamps, a lot of my lamps flow differently.  Some will flow alike and other will not.

wow, burnt up on 40w?  what happened?  i run my yellow neon on 40w at full strength for 8 hours a day, every day, and have no problems.

All of my neons have wax burnt/stuck to the bottom of the globe. And part way up the side. It stops right under the top of the base. The watermelon will hardly flow now and it's the newest

Yikes. I don't run mine that much... I should though - just to see what will happen to them over time.

I'm surprised you guys have this Much trouble with the neon lamps mine run fine they get switched out everyday to run at night
I've had mine for awhile now. All but the watermelon

did you get the neons when they first came out?  i'm wondering if the wax is part of a bad batch.  i remember LL pulling neons for a bit and replacing them.  my yellow neon came after this replacement and i don't have any problems with it.  it's on my desk at work on a timer.
